well i meant right in more figurative sense i guess, i mean comparing any modern day political party to ones from the 1860s is outrageous, but i was thinking of the parties flipping in the 1960s/70s during the civil rights movement and such

Well... I never say this, but that moderation should be overturned. It's perfectly reasonable to reference the Civil War and slavery when answering a question about the origin of the term "Grand Old Party." Those details are totally relevant to why the party calls itself the GOP.

The moderator isn't wrong about the disconnect between the Party of Lincoln and the modern Republican Party... but that doesn't apply to the exchange in question.

Mistakes were made.

I don't trust the education of all the mods to accurately make this moderation, so they just shouldn't do it whether he's right or not. On paper, the Republicans freed the slaves.

A lot of the problem is that US politics misuses the world liberal. So the Republicans remaining economically more liberal (well until anti-free trade Trump came along) but becoming socially conservative is where the disconnect happens. Democrats are definitely the more socially liberal party (outside of gun control), but economically (prior to Trump) tended to be less liberal. US politics is just super messy because two big parties house a lot of ideologically inconsistent principles but people feel compelled to try to come up with some kind of ideology to explain their support for their party of choice despite the hodgepodge of positions. This leads to liberal and conservative being misused.

And don't even get me started on calling capitalist countries in Europe socialist.

Abe Lincoln himself said things that would be considered inconceivably racist if anyone uttered them today. It's really difficult to get in the head of someone who lived in a time you haven't known.
