So I can start building credit and all that junk, also do I need a checking account if I just have a credit card that I'll pay off every month in this case?

It's easier to just apply for Target's Red Card. I mostly just bought games and snacks. Things easy to pay off.

You can try Wal-Mart too. Maybe Best Buy? I don't think I have anything with Best Buy though.

My first credit purchase was an Xbox 360 in 2006 and I paid it off by putting like $15 - $20 week on it just to get ahead of schedule.

If you have a stable job and some savings just go to your bank in person and figure that shit out. I qualified for a card easily that my applications online were saying I had no chance at.

Just get a card with cash back rewards and the lowest apr you can manage. Or you can get a secured card.

Discover just approved me for a card when I started college and I've been using it ever since.

It's only got like 1500 spending limit, but at the same time I have no real need to ever go beyond that so it's kept me from making dumb mistakes.

Some people scoff at me only have one card that has like 1500 but I've used it for damn near 10 years now and it got me to an 811 credit score before medical debt kicked my ass so *shrug*

If you have no credit history you'll probably need to get a secured credit card. These are credit cards with low credit limits and very high interest, designed for ppl with shitty credit or non existent credit (like yourself). Use this for a few months, pay it off every month, and then you can move on to applying for a regular credit card with a solid limit. I had a Capital One secured card that was good, I think it started me with a $500 credit limit

Yeah, don't get a store branded credit card. Get one from a bank that offers rewards like cash back. Capital One has some good starter options.

Quicksilver Capital One card or one through your bank/Credit union.

Both should be easy to get, both shouldnt have an annual fee. And at least with Capital One, you get cashback on everything to get you started.

Capital One sucks, but they are a good starting point. Just dont get anything else from them.

I just went with USAA cause I had insurance through them.

Else I probably would have went through Chase since I have a checking account with them.

The Quicksilver card he can most likely get approved for has a $40 annual fee and high apr but still worth it as long as he pays his balance in full every month.

I think the Quicksilver One card has the fee. My friend with no history applied for the Quicksilver with no fee, and she was approved straight out of High School, so I assume they arent too hard to get.

Though yea, Im assuming TC wont carry a balance.

Is that the QuicksilverOne that has the annual fee? I know the regular Quicksilver doesn't because I used to have it.

TC can start with a QuicksilverOne if he can't qualify for the regular one, and then just do a product change after several months.

Damn when I was first starting out I couldn't get approved for the one without the fee. Online it says the required credit score is 700 or higher for the card without the fee. I got approved for the One at 540 lol

My first card was a rewards card from my bank, but it's really underwhelming.

If you use Amazon Prime at all, the Amazon card is actually pretty solid. 5% on Amazon purchases, 2% on gas, drugstores and restaurants, 1% on everything else. They have random deals you can accept (like "10% back on Starbucks" or "18% back on Little Caesar's"). **AND** you don't even have to spend your reward points at Amazon - even though it's an Amazon card and you can use the points there, you can also just as easily cash them out for cashback rewards, gift cards, etc. like most other cards.

Chase Freedom/Freedom Unlimited is a good one.

No annual fee, and I believe they're still running a $200 bonus promo on that card with a $500 minimum spend.

Yeah, those are good cards but I only hesitate on Chase for TC because they tend to want to see some history before they approve you.

True, though I myself am relatively new to the credit card game, and got approved for the CFU with only 4 months credit history on a Capital One Platinum (which is basically a starter card)

Ok cool stuff.

If TC is feeling lucky, I'd shoot for Chase. They have some good cards in their portfolio. I've got their Sapphire Preffered card and I think it's nice.

My first and only card is with Capitol one. It was very easy to get and my credit is really good about 9 years later. I pay it off in full each month and get 1% cash back. I've tried getting a higher % card but didn't qualify because of my student loans.

Dont get a store credit card as your first card. Theyre not as desirable as normal credit cards when it comes to establishing and raising credit.

Also DO NOT just start randomly applying for cards. Hard credit checks stay on your history for two years and too many will negatively effect you.

What i would recommend is pick a bank youd like to open an account with, go to their website, and see if youre pre-approved for any offers. This will lessen the chances of your hard check being denied. In my experience Capital One is a good place to get started.

My first card card was a secured card from Capital One. I paid a $200 deposit for a $500 limit. I only used it for gas and paid it in full every month. After maybe 6-8 months I started getting offers for real credit cards.
