Edgy black and red Sonic OC created by Gerald Robotnik to be the Ultimate Life Form. Bonds with a 14 year old girl who he sees get gunned down before sent to Earth and trapped in suspended animation for 50 years. Gets freed and frames Sonic despite the fact they don't actually look anything alike. Wants to collect all Chaos Emeralds so he can power the Eclipse Cannon found in the Space Colony Ark. Constantly has flashbacks to Maria and won't stop saying her name

Please understand...
The ultimate lifeform created by Gerald Robotnik was Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic was put in an escape pod when the station was attacked, hit his head when he landed and lost his memories.
Gerald was forced to create a new ultimate lifeform for GUN, which he gave false memories of watching his daughter die because he knew that it would backstab GUN if they ever tried to activate it.
GUN learns about this and decides to not activate it.
But GUN also got footage of the original ultimate lifeform and believes that it is no coincidence that it suddenly appears just after the second one gets activated and escapes, and in case they are working together it is better to be safe than sorry.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Master System's story is so sad.
Robotnik kidnaps Tails at the start of the game, and if you don't collect all of the chaos emeralds, it ends with Sonic running for a whole day, to a sad tune, trying to stop his eyes from getting filled with tears.
He stops once it is night, looking up at the sky and seeing the face of Tails in the stars.
RIP Tails.

Why do Sonic games need a story?

That's the problem with people who want old mascot characters in modern games. They weren't supposed to have stories. You run around and do fun things. Games like Mario, Crash, Spyro, Sonic and more. Mario is the only one that really did it right since Miyamoto understands that Mario and modern gaming stories don't mix.

Im surprised Crash didnt get a story. The reason Sonic started edging towards being plot-driven is because Sonic was given a personality to set him apart from Marios lack of characterization.

So if he has a personality, its best to demonstrate that through character interactions. Crash has a personality too and sometimes I do wonder how hed get on if he could interact with others.

One of the more memorable parts of Banjo-Kazooie is Kazooie being a jerk to everyone, after all.

This. The plot was over-the-top but it was great at letting the Sonic characters interact and showcase their individual personalities. Sonic's rivalry with Eggman, Sonic's constant bickering with Knuckles, Knuckles' flirting with Rogue, Eggman trying to outdo Tails, and Shadow's edginess interactions with everyone were good fun.

Even Amy's annoying presence had its place in the story. Sure it won't win any writing awards and the dialogue is cringy more often than not but it works for the kind of game Sonic is. Personally, the "darker" games after that just felt too tryhard. This had a good balance of serious and humor.

Also, regarding mixing up Sonic and Shadow. As far as the world knows, there is only one talking hedgehog. Most people have probably not even met him or seen him before. Not crazy to believe that fast hedgehog breaking into bases isn't the fast hedgehog you've heard stories about.

Not like Sonic has a social security number.

It makes more sense when you look at it as a cover up. Shadow is the last remaining evidence of the massacre aboard the ARK. So GUN threw all his crimes onto Sonic to try and conceal his existence.

sonic games have always had a story, in fact the best sonic game of all (sonic 3 & knuckles) was the genesis game that had the most amount of story

story improves sonic games, as long as it doesn't veer into edgy grimdark shadow the hedgehog territory

in fact, the thing that made the early sonic games memorable was that the stories of each game built on each other...

sonic 2 introduced the death egg
sonic 3 the death egg crashes into angel island and robotnik tricks knuckles into doing his dirty work
sonic and knuckles you find out about the master emerald which greatly expands the lore behind the chaos emeralds, and the death egg is destroyed for the final time
sonic adventure you learn about the history of angel island, the echidna tribes, the master emerald, chaos, and tikal

SA1 debatably had the best story of all

To be fair, I always loved the Adventure plots not because they're good, but because it was more of a guilty pleasure thing. Especially the vocal tracks.
