Pete Buttigieg thinks he deserves to be president because he did all the "right things" growing up. He went an elite high school, a prestigious ivy league university, started a career in consulting, joined the military and became a lieutenant, and then became a mayor of a town. Someone tell mayor pete that life isn't a video game achievement list that you try to 100% and also that he needs to actually stand for something if he wants to become the leader of our nation. something besides his own ego and self image at least

Yeah, and if anyone around him has told him that, he isn't listening.

yeah, i'm very disappointed in him. he looked so good in the beginning too.

Did he? In the beginning when he had not a single policy stance?

Cops aint pulling over people and killing them for being gay.....

Just family members disowning them, throwing them onto the streets, strangers assaulting them, laws working against them, people protesting your existence being acknowledged and taught...

Yes, the particulars of "the struggles" might be different, but oppressed groups would do wonders in rallying together. They each deserve to be treated fairly and like any other person, rather than the inhumane ways many different groups do. Trying to be "unique in our suffering" just distances us from each other and helps other, other people's suffering and means politicians can help one group while ignoring the rest and say "LOOK AT ME, I DID GOOD"

There are definitely better ways to word this though than he did. Empathise with it, not claim it as your own. Work on uniting the oppressed to make politicians handle all of it and not just make token efforts to one group occasionally. No on, gay, straight, trans, black or anything else deserve the unjust treatment we suffer.

LGBT were oppressed and hidden in most societies for thousands of years of human existence. They are still getting jailed or executed in some parts of the world.

It sure is interesting how conservatives complain about victim complexes and racism being dead and then have giant bleeding hearts for black people when the alternative is admitting the LGBT community has faced quite a bit of adversity.

Yeah except he totally is. I hate it when gays try to compare themselves to blacks.

A) Us black people arent all victims and dont live our lives fearful of everything
B) A privileged white guy comparing himself to being black is laughable. The fact that hes a white man, young, is already a mayor, AND now running for President speaks to his white privilege
C) You can hide your sexuality and who you bang. Us blacks people cant hide our skin color.
D) a cop pulls next to a black dude and a white gay guy. I can take a bet as to who the cop is pulling over (it aint gonna be the gay white guy)

Mayor Pete Buttigieg has delivered a provocative response in recent days to those who challenge his empathy with black Americans: His experience as a gay man helps him relate to the struggles of African Americans.

Oh please. It doesn't help you relate to shit other than the struggles of... gay people.

Why does everything have to be a contest?

"I've been oppressed more!"

"No I have!"

Why can't they just admit both black people and gay people have struggled, shake each others hand and then work to get Trump fired?

While I do not have the experience of ever having been discriminated against because of the color of my skin, I do have the experience of sometimes feeling like a stranger in my own country, turning on the news and seeing my own rights come up for debate, and seeing my rights expanded by a coalition of people like me and people not at all like me...

I don't know how Buttigieg could have made it any clearer. He opened by saying that his struggles as a gay man are not equivalent to the struggles of racial minorities. Then he explained how those experiences overlap in one specific way. Lastly, he calls for a coalition. A lot of posts ITT miss one or more of these points completely.

When are people going to realize that race will ALWAYS outrank gender and sexual orientation in the "I am Oppressed" hierarchy...

I get what he's saying and it's unfair that he'll be taken less seriously now, but it is what it is concerning the subject. No matter how articulate and careful you word it, you don't just say it because you instantly lose credibility.
