tl;dw:
-Contestants' cars would take 5-7 months to get "pimped" and in the meantime, they had to find their own transportation. Since most of them were under 25, renting cars was almost impossible.
-The cars were only cosmetically fixed. Any mechanical or engine trouble was never touched.
-They would rent out fake houses and make fake backstories for contestants to fit the show's episode and sometimes force certain designs onto contestants even if it didn't match what they wanted
-Staff straight up threatened one dude to be more enthusiastic for the camera since he wasn't to happy with his ride in the initial take
-Certain accessories would stop working after a few uses or had to be removed after recording due to impracticality (ie: LED seats would get too hot, rods raising up the rear doors would obstruct seatbelts and sitting, extra weight would put a strain on the suspension, etc.)

MTV actually covered the rental fees during the "pimping" process.

The rest were true though. Mad Mike gave the contestants an emergency contact number in case because he knew the cars will break down eventually.

Idk, going off the tldw really the only shady things they did were threats and incompetent installs. They never implied they were going to fix anyones mechanical problems. Setting up a fake house/back story is just creating a more compelling narrative for viewers. Just cause the word "reality" is slapped on doesn't make it real, I have no sympathy for anyone who thought otherwise. Not doing a design you like is lame, but its still better than what you had before, and you are aware theres the chance you won't like it, so again no sympathy. Leaving them without a car is also kinda whack, but once again its what they signed on for so they shouldn't have done it if they couldn't afford to.

Looking back, reality TV basically became a training ground for propagandists and people who are exceptionally skilled at blurring the lines between reality and fiction in order to manipulate a response out of people. And now we have the reality TV president.

Basically. People look to examples on how to live and back then you had stuff like Brad Bunch and Boy Meets World.

In the 00's, reality made being stupid okay. I'll point to shows like Jersey Shore and the Bachelor.

er.... elaborate?

There was a scathing video posted on Youtube recently from some people who worked on the show about how the challenges were faked - eg $5k budget challenge (it was the buy a cheap luxury car challenge) but in reality they had $10k to spend and then got mechanics to work on the cars prior to the show so that they'd work, getting crew to do all the driving scenes (eg drag races) rather than the stars, etc. And confirmed Tanner = Stig.

Edit: Found the video. Note it was obviously from someone with a bit of an axe to grind, but it doesn't sound implausible:
