The only point to better gear is getting more points. So you get a higher score because you played more, not because youre better. The better gear does not make your kart faster or have better controls, etc. It would just be a lot more reasonable to spend money on something more engaging and deep. But tbh, I have spent money on Pokemon GO. Probably $100. I feel there is justification for this though, because its kind of in its own territory and gets you to meet people irl.
