The block where I live is essentially a one way entrance, and has about 30 houses. At the entrance, there is a nice, brick, ornate sign that is lit up (typically what you would expect for an HOA / cookie cutter "Ryan" homes, but my block has all custom homes and is also not an HOA).

Turns out ever since 22 years ago, the residents of this block all got together and donated to get that made. Ever since then, they rely on donations to maintain the sign.

Letter I got says it costs $600/year to maintain (grounds keeping plus electric). The household that is taking care of that sign is inviting everyone over for a Christmas breakfast tomorrow morning, and requested people to bring donations for the sign, as the funds are getting low (~$400 in reserves).

I just moved into this house, and I never really met my neighbors. I'm guessing I should go, to introduce myself and get to know the neighbors somewhat. So...... how much should I donate?
.
.
.
TL;DR: My block has a brick sign at the entrance that costs $600/year to maintain. My block is not an HOA. One house is hosting a Christmas breakfast to solicit donations to keep it going. How much should I donate?

What exactly is the point of the sign? Sounds like a waste of money.

If its a lot of people going just donate $40. Normies make over $20 an hour so don't feel obligated to give a lot

It has the street name on it. It's like really freaking big, about 8ft high and 12ft wide, and all made of ornate stone pieces.

Agreed. I was curious who put up the sign, since we're not part of the HOA... now I know lol

Well they're providing breakfast, pastries, and drinks tomorrow morning, so I assume it's more of a "community" thing.

Agreed. I was literally thinking of throwing in $20, but idk if that's viewed as cheap. I like the idea of looking what someone else donated, assuming it's not in an envelope or something...

Personally, I'd take two envelopes, put $20 in and $40 in the other. Do a quick number count of the area to see how many houses you think attended. If it's less than 15, drop 40, more drop 20

It's stone, so you'd need something like pure fluorine gas to get it to ignite.

How does that dumb little sign cost $600 to upkeep a year? Do they still use ancient million watt bulbs to light it up and pay some landscape company affiliated with Snap-on to mow the grass?

$600. Rookie foots the bill. You pay the bill until a new home owner comes. Then you have to convince them to pay the full $600.

idk; maybe land price is included in that bill, since that sign is nowhere near anyone's house.
