I skimmed his wikipedia article, but can someone more acknowledged in his life explain his position in regards to America in the midst of seeking independence from Britain? I read that he was a very stout patriot, fiercely loyal to the Crown - yet, he apparently endeared himself to America around the time of the Stamp Act...
