It's one of the top ten most difficult NES games -- putting Contra and Ninja Gaiden to shame -- and it's based on a fucking Saturday morning cartoon show.

I just beat the game. My second time ever doing so. I'm in heart attack mode. The bones in my arms are sore from stress. Motherfucking astronaut bastards. Those guys are impossible.

That game was ahead of it's time in some aspects. Apparently different enemies are easier to beat some brothers and harder with others and you have to know when to switch to which turtle to make the game easier. Then came the damn dam level which was just unfair.

I never made it past the dam as a kid and haven't replayed it since.

Without switching turtles, I can beat the dam by the skin of my teeth.

The really cheap part of the game is that they don't refill your health after completing a stage. You just need to have turtles in reserve who are well and can scout out health-replenishing pizzas for the wounded. It's unnecessary and it turns the game into a war of attrition.

Also, that final hallway just before Shredder is impossible.

I don't mind the combat, health not refilling is artificial difficulty but not terrible, but some of the jumps are WAY too precise. There's one in a sewer that is so bad I thought I needed a special item when I was a kid.

I know the jump you're talking about. You need to get a running start and then leap just before the tip of the edge. I think there are other ways of crossing it, but that seems to be the most effective.

It has the floatiest jumps of any game I can think of. It's definitely by design as some of the jumps challenge you to master the wonky controls. The underlining joke of TMNT was taking something which required discipline and quick reflexes and applying it to such a clumsy animal as a turtle. I guess maybe the programmers felt that turtles would be anything but steady if they were able to jump.
