There's not a single mod, to my knowledge, who is a legitimately constructive and empathetic person. All of them seem to have this glib disdain for the users of this site. Sarcasm, quips, ivory tower "follow the rules" bullshit. Whatever the offense, at any given time, you all do it.

Fair enough comment on my post. I swooped into the topic quickly, saw that post and just answered the question. Seems very glib and dismissive in hindsight, so apologies for that. That said, let me assure you that I dont come at this with any disdain for the users whatsoever. Are there bad apples who blatantly and constantly break the rules and make things difficult for everyone? Well certainly. Are there folks on the other side of the spectrum who get overly mark-happy and think anything and everything is a violation? Of course. So the ongoing challenge is finding that happy medium to where you make the experience a good one for those folks in the middle who just want to come here, have a decent time, and not get hassled by jerks or trolls, and also dont have to worry about getting caught up in getting punished by overly strict rules. Thats where Im coming from, anyway.

I like the fact that we, as a mod team, get to vote on disputes. Ive only been back on the force for a few weeks, but I already feel more productive in getting a few moderations overturned. In the past when you felt a moderation was not warranted for the post your only choice in handling the matter was to forward it back to the original mod with an explanation as to why the post should not have been moderated. If the original moderator felt strongly enough that the post was truly a violation, they would just uphold the dispute. This made arguing these types of circumstances quite challenging, and pretty much a waste of time, honestly, in circumstances where you sided with the user. So the voting is actually a great thing, despite how anyone might feel about the lack of return commentary that is now associated with the dispute process.

I do miss that were not able to comment back to the users in disputes. Ive seen a few now where the incorrect moderation reason might have been chosen, and where the user might have legitimately been confused as to why their post was a violation. It might be that the post was a violation, sure, but for a totally different reason for what they actually got hit with.

Thats why I actually do like that we can comment to users on the initial moderation, and that we do have the ability to notify without deletion. Its really our only opportunity to communicate with users other than a PM after the fact. Ive used this on quite a few occasions with Spoilers in particular, where its very helpful to actually educate the user in what they did incorrect as opposed to feeing like youre punishing them.

Thats my $0.02 on all of that, anyway.

I hate to be this guy, but there is pretty much no cases where you should just be NWDing a spoiler without warning. The spoiler without proper warning is still visible to the boards if you do that. >_>

Oh, exactly. I was deleting the messages or topics in these cases, not just NWDing them. I just meant its nice to be able to comment to the user along with the deletion, and that in those kinds of instances I dont feel like Im punishing anyone, per se. Sorry if my post made it sound otherwise.

You provided a detailed, thoughtful response and offered as much insight as you could. I still think the system is pretty awful, and that way more mods are punish-happy than is healthy for the total discussion (especially political), but at least some of you actually try.

I wish more would do the same. There are few things more frustrating than getting into a debate, typing a long, detailed, complex post with citations and sources, then getting modded with the explanation of: "don't link to offensive material"

Like...I get that some mods are politically biased to the extreme, but enough of them are biased enough to uphold the literal, blatant, and unapologetic censorship of facts? That seems like a pretty significant problem with the culture of the mod community.

The mockery coming from the mod staff seemingly every time somebody raises a reasonable concern doesn't help their image, either.

This isn't the first conversation I've had with mods. My first reflex used to be to discuss and try to understand. I tend to receive replies that are synonymous with "shut the fuck up." Not in so many words.

I can't speak on that because I haven't seen the video nor am I going to ask you to post it, and I don't know the context that it was posted for.

But generally transgenderism is a pretty touchy subject and most things to the contrary will be deleted as offensive (i.e intentionally misgendering, out of context videos, etc.). And honestly, that's not even a matter of political opinion as I've known left leaning people with not-so-favorable views on transgenders and vice versa.

People are free to have their own opinions. But gamefaqs just isn't the place to express your disdain for that group of people as per the standards set by people above the mod staff.

And just in response to your last post, me agreeing or disagreeing with you politically doesn't matter in this conversation, those are just the fact in the matter.

Palming it off to higher-ups is a nice deflection. It's not like they're paying people do to this, which reflects on their priorities and the actual level of seriousness they place on these issues. It would be better to retain credibility and step down than enforce unjust censorship, because by staying on we can only assume you agree with everything they do.

So what is the incentive here? This is not "bettering the world" and really, not even bettering the site as the decline in traffic shows. There are people in unfree countries that have to literally fight for their free speech, while we forget these lessons, slowly decline and appear to be giving it all up for nothing. Gamefaqs users should have their human rights respected and that involves the basic ability to tell the truth, which I will continue to do.

The mere concept that a debate about the facts of a case... objective facts, mind you...has been pre-characterized as "disdain." That's part of the problem. The site has baked-in bias, but to blame "the site" would be to blame an entity that doesn't exist.

The people who control the conversation, the people with the 'power' to supersede debate and lay down their version of the law. Those are the people who abuse their position to manipulate discussion and unfairly censor opinions they don't like.

Even if those opinions are not opinions at all, but are 100% factual.

I'm not arguing politics. I'm arguing that the mod system is terrible, while using a past example of political bias as a talking point.

I said I wasn't going to argue back and forth about politics, or use politics as a means to insult other users. I'm not doing that.

Productive conversation isn't the goal of the mods. Their goal is to mock, belittle, and gaslight the users they're punishing as often as possible.

If that's how you really feel, go post somewhere that doesn't moderate its content. If you feel like you're unjustly being confined to a tiny box via zealous moderator judgement, then you're probably going to have a better time posting somewhere with more lax rules or without moderation altogether.

If your overarching view on moderators is that they only exist to abuse their power and harass legitimate users of the board, then find somewhere where this supposed abuse of power is a non-issue - i.e. where there are no moderators.

Your comments aren't going to move Heaven and Earth to overhaul this website's moderation policies. If your contempt genuinely runs this deep for the GameFAQs mod staff, then you should really ask yourself the question as to why you still post here when the reaction to your posts, in your eyes, is this poor.

I think you're reading into it a whole lot more than it actually is. It's pretty simple. Post offensive shit, someone gets offended, they mark your post for moderation. If its someone being whiny because they just disagree with you then we ignore it. If it's an actual violation, we mod it. I've modded offensive posts that align with my own political opinions before because even if I agree with the person's opinion, they probably expressed it in a shitty way.

That being said, saying "All democrats are <offensive term>" or "All republicans are <abusive phrase>" are pretty much always going to be modded for abusive behavior. Because, believe it or not, both Dems and Rep users exist on this website.

80% of disputes I feel like can be summed up with that message which is one reason we switched in the first place.

In summary: if you have an opinion; don't be a jerk about it and some opinions are best kept to yourself.
