Because Reach is a prequel, and because it also needed to get ported to the Xbone it required the greatest amount of work.

is reach worth it for single player?

my internet is too unstable(lol wireless broadband) for any type of reaction based MP so if i'm gonna jump in it would only be for the campaigns.

i only played through halo 1 ages ago and barely remember anything and seems like it's still just the typical power bro fantasy of military gruff guys going against evil aliens.

Halo 1s campaign has probably aged the worst. Im quite willing to admit that nostalgia IS in fact the reason its my favorite.

However, id say the story is at least slightly more complicated than what you described, and if youre going to be playing the other campaigns of the series, it wouldnt make sense to exempt the first one, since it does lay out the foundation for the rest of the series.

Reach has Firefight which gives you tons of replay value. So yes, it is.
