For a change of pace, not that I imagine any of this comes to a surprise to anyone, the NYT got ahold of some data from a location data company that covered 12 million cellphones focused in a handful of cities like DC, NYC, and San Francisco over a period of a year and despite only having that small slice of data from a single company they showed what you could do with this information:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/19/opinion/location-tracking-cell-phone.html All of this information was "anonymized" but they explain it's laughably trivial to put names to these data points even with what they had - let alone to companies or actors who have access to other data sets to supplement it. They tracked a senior Defense Department official to the Women's March in DC, to an event with Obama in 2017, high schools, friends' houses, military bases. They could ID and track protestors at the inauguration. And the police present. They observed a Microsoft engineer, saw a change in his daily routine and saw he made a single visit to Amazon's Seattle campus and one month later he was working with Amazon. They could track journalists too and could see them on trips to motels. And of course once they ID someone, they could use the data to see what they were doing months before and after that point and basically map out their lives. And the entire industry is basically unregulated. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? ... Copied to Clipboard!

The 6th Amendment guarantees defendants the right to a speedy trial if they so choose, and the Senate could easily just adopt that. Given that Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham have both said (not just implied) that neither of them will be 'impartial jurors' and that this is 'not a judicial process', Mr. Trump and his allies would have difficulty arguing in court that Mr. Trump's 'right to a speedy trial' was violated. --- It's more like if you don't have to wait in line at Arby's because some dude stopped by and kidnapped all of the other customers. - MoogleKupo141 ... If they plan to dismiss the case for failure to allege an impeachable offense, then they don't need witnesses. I'm not sure the Senate needs the House to formally present the charges to do that either. The articles of impeachment are public and the Senate can rule that as as matter of law, even if all the facts alleged therein are true an impeachable offense has not been charged.
If the Senate isn't going to do that, I think there will need to be witnesses. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! ... Copied to Clipboard!

His strategies may seem strange, but they've worked over a lifetime, and, probably big reason for his success is that he is good at getting people to underestimate him. Mr. Trump actually isn't particularly good at getting off scot-free from lawsuits. Look at Trump University and the more recent case where he took money from a Veteran's charity. You can't look at raw numbers and say "Look, he's good at it!" That'd be a mistake. (And one MItch McConnell may very well have made in his calculations.) I don't think Mitch McConnell is particularly smart, either. Like Mr. Trump, he is brazen. He lacks shame, and is willing to do anything to win. But I wouldn't mistake that for him having some sort of plan. He wanted to overturn the Affordable Care Act, and despite controlling the house, the senate, and the white house, he was unable to get it done. So the students were largely reimbursed because their attorneys were willing to work for free? That has nothing to do really with Trump's skill in defending lawsuits. As for getting back 90% after a decade - that's not being made whole. That doesn't cover the time spent, the expectation the students were promised of riches, and most importantly, a decade of investment returns. If Trump put that tuition money into an index fund he probably ended up with a profit of around 100% of the original tuition. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! ...
