I lost my job 10 years ago. Setting everything else aside, it was my fault for taking the bait and I should have walked away when given the opportunity.

By all rights and measures, Im better off now than I was there. Im just afraid that one or more of the people involved will show up again, or that my old workplace will screw me over somehow. Ive kept some very painful documents on hand just in case something happens.

Id like to be free from all of this. I learned the hard way that this group practically requires me to keep a paper trail, so Id like to figure out when its ok to shred my stuff. If you were in my position, what steps would you take to ensure that you were completely in the clear?

Seriously, unless this is the case, I think you're over-worrying.

Losing your job is an extremely traumatic experience and I understand and empathize with your worries. Is your main concern that they could say or do something that misrepresents the events, which would somehow negatively impact your current position? If that's the case, then I don't think that having a legitimate paper trail is a bad plan. But how likely are they do to that? Probably not very, especially if it's been 10 years without an incident.

Agreeing with Peace above, if it's been 10 years it's not unreasonable to not have them on your resume or LinkedIn profile, use them as a reference, etc. You really should be disconnected from that past - I was also let go from a job 10 years ago and while there wasn't that level of animosity, I've been able to drop it off my work history since I've done so much more since then (but it was also an entry/low-level job so not an issue in the grand scheme of things)

But I see the concern, if someone from that long ago is a dick or holds some kind of grudge, finds out where you're working and wants to screw you over after all this time, you need to be able to defend yourself. That's rough. I don't think there's harm in throwing the docs in a folder and burying it in your closet (or some area you live where you wouldn't come across it), maybe for a few more years...

I guess the other question is, what's prompting this? Did you hit that 10 year anniversary recently and start thinking about it? Is it because you're job hunting or in a precarious workplace situation? It doesn't sound like any of the people involved have shown up, it's just a fear of if they show up?

For those wondering, I worked in county government. There were some genuinely corrupt people who went to jail around that time. I wasn't one of them, but I'm convinced that my asking the wrong questions is what brought my situation to a head. That, and the fact that my supervisor was afraid of me for reasons that escape me.

The reason I'm so upset is that they've already screwed me once before with our settlement (I dropped my appeal, they were supposed to give me a neutral reference, they didn't and I only found out a couple of years into my job search). How easy would it have been for some malicious somebody to plant something else in there?
