Going from acting in thr biggest film series ever to voice acting is pretty weak. Most people don't even know Luke Skywalker voiced Joker.

The thing is most of these people just have one big role and then go away. Most actors end up bar tending so to have one big role making you tons of money is a huge deal for most people. I mean shit I wish I was famous and didn't really have to work again.

A few reasons

  1. The infamous car crash
  2. He apparently never felt comfortable as a "heartthrob" or "actiony" actor
  3. He married and started a family
  4. He got a pretty sweet deal for starring in New Hope (IIRC he earned a percentage of what the film grossed as part of the deal) so he never needed to work again

The infamous car crash
This is probably the biggest factor. If you don't know, he was in a pretty brutal car crash between the filming of ANH and ESB. It did noticeable damage to one side of his face and his nose. You can see it somewhat in ESB and a lot more in RotJ.

Isn't that why the snow monster thing clawed his face at the beginning of ESB? So they had a canonical explanation for his face being a little fucked up

Mark Hamill got typecast as Luke Skywalker / a guy who will appear in any science fiction movie for a paycheck.

Really though, the way to break out of typecasting is to get a big role before the series wraps. Sylvester Stallone had a few bombs outside of the Rocky series before making bank with First Bood (Rambo). Harrison Ford starred in two Star Wars movies before becoming Indiana Jones. It seems like when you have your second big role, that's when people (and studios) see you as more than just an extension of the character you're most famous for playing.

lets see here. After starring in the biggest film trilogy ever, he
1. Is irrelevant for nearly a decade
2. Voices Joker in one iconic cartoon from 1992-1995 (Batman TAS)
3. Voices Joker in an inferior cartoon from 1997-1999 (New Batman Adventures)
4. Voices Joker in a direct to video cartoon movie in 2001 (Return Of Joker)
5. Voices Joker from 2002-2003 in just 3 episodes of Justice League, a nerdy cartoon that was mainly watched by comic book nerds while kids preferred shit like Teen Titans
6. Voices in a couple of video games

Yes he fell way the fuck off. Going from Hollywood blockbusters to a few nerdy Saturday morning cartoons, one direct to video animated movies and three video games is pathetic

If you're irrelevant for nearly a decade, you've fallen off.

And if your "comeback" is just voicing in mostly forgettable Saturday morning cartoons and video games, you've still fallen off.

Get a reality check. His voice role as Joker is nothing to his role as Luke Skywalker

Arnold Schwarzenegger was very opposed to his casting in Terminator because having a debut as the bad guy generally does not help. Predator basically got made for him to have a major protagonist role. It turns out that it was kind of unnecessary and he was just fucking great in general.

While nowhere near the same cultural impact as Predator, Commando pretty much existed to be Schwarzenegger's demo reel. "I'm fit... Let's not be modest. I'm RIPPED. I can beat up the bad guys. I can crack one-liners. I can be intimidating, but I can also be relatable. Did you see that scene where my movie-daughter and I fed a deer?"

Batman TAS is literally the only notable thing Hamil did after Star Wars, and that was nearly a decade after the RotJ. Even then, Batman TAS isn't jack shit to Star Wars.

New Batman Adventures (poor man's Batman TAS), Return Of Joker (lol direct to video), three epsiodes of Justice League (kids only liked Teen Titans) and the Arkham games (which first came out in 2008. That's not gonna make up for all his time doing nothing)? This dorky shit comes close to the original Star Wars trilogy?

Yes, he fell off hard and never came close to recovering. I should expect CE to not know what they're talking about

In hindsight, I think the best thing for Mark Hamill would've been to have played a secret agent. Either immediately before or immediately after Return of the Jedi. Even if it meant a pay cut.

The film could have shown his character training and acquiring his skills which he would later use to defeat the bad guys in the film. What does that sound like? That's kinda like Luke Skywalker training with Yoda -- except this character doesn't use fancy space magic to win his battles. He triumphs using skills and acquired knowledge.

The theme of acquiring and applying new skills would have felt at home, but the setting would have been the furthest thing from outer space. It would have forced the audience to reevaluate Mark Hamill's worth to them and to see him as more than just "Luke Skywalker."

It seems like the way to escape from typecasting is to play a dissimilar character type which still plays to the strengths of the actor. That guy who learns things and later applies them to defeat the bad guys is too oddly specific to ever become a typecast.

Beyond that, Ford had already starred in American Graffiti before any of the SW movies. By the time the original trilogy was over, he'd also starred in Raiders of the Lost Ark & Blade Runner, so he was huge.

Compared to that, Hamill's biggest non SW role was as one of the ensemble in the Big Red One, which was heavily cut when it was first released and made a very minimal impact at the time-- though if you get the Restored version that's on DVD, it's a pretty great war movie.

The man is breaking 300 voice acting credits at this point. Just because The Joker was the most notable voice acting role he's in doesn't mean he hasn't been working prolifically. I challenge you to go to scroll through his voice acting credits and see how many years you can find where he hasn't worked on, say, at least 5 different projects in that one year.
