I'm an ex-fed & I used to fly from LAX to DC all the time. YES! They do. For whatever reason there is/was only one direct flight from LAX to DC and I would see politicians all the time with regular passengers on that flight. I was told it "Looks bad" for them to be seen in first class so they squeeze in like everyone else. I saw many but Tom Harkin, Wes Clark, Patrick Kennedy, Anthony Weiner and Tammy Duckwork (who had to go through extra screening for her prosthetic legs) stood out to me.
As soon as I saw Anthony Weiner, I knew someday he would get in trouble for something. As a government employee, my agency had a policy of "no first class, unless directly approved by the Secretary" - which meant, "no first class, period". --- It's not about the size of the dog in the fight, it's about the size of the fight in the dog. ... Many do, yes. The President and VP are really the only ones that have to fly on special crafts for protection sake. I'd assume some have private dealings and many fly business or first class,which would likely come out of their own pocket, but a lot just fly commercial like everyone else.
