Honesty we should be telling high school kids that if they use drugs they will be arrested and spend their best years behind bars. That'll scare them strait. And if it doesnt? Well then they'll spend their best years behind bars.

Lol @ anyone who thinks this will stop kids from smoking. I started at 14 when the law was still 18, do you think it was hard to get cigarettes and alcohol? Fuck no, all I had to do was ask someone I knew that was over 21 and they would always get it for me
This has been discussed, and yes that's how it happens. But its more likely for someone 13 or 14 to get it from an 18 year old than a 21 year old because they have closer ties to the 18 year old, either by still being in school with them, or still knowing them for a year or 2 after they graduate. Does the latter (a 21 year old buying it) happen? Yea of course, but i feel like the disconnect when it comes to a 13 year old asking a 21 year old will help reduce that vs a 13 year old asking an 18 year old who JUST graduated, still has a HS mentality and was cool with that 13 year old while they were in classes together....You know?

What is D.A.R.E.s position on marijuana as a gateway drug?

After decades of studies, the research is still inconclusive regarding whether or not marijuana is a gateway drug

i don't care what their "official policy" is. all i know is what they came into my classroom and told me. and what they told me was that weed is a super terrible drug that will lead to me doing meth and cocaine.

Also, why is stupid shit like this in a defense spending bill? I hate the way we cram shit into huge packages. The bush admin was always trying to push oil drilling in the alaskan wildlife preserve into defense bills, then when dems would oppose it the GOP would be like "omg the dems hate our troops, they won't sign this bill to fund the military"

It still has nothing to do with defense or the military stop putting anything that isn't military related into defense spending bills. I'm not really even opposed to raising it to 21. I just find it absurd that we let people make a decision like joining the military at 18 but won't let them smoke or drink till 21. The correct solution would be raise the military age to 21. Will never happen though because people are less likely to join the military if they've been to college or have established themselves in a career or trade.

Oh boy, it'll be slightly more inconvenient for 18-20 year old smokers to get cigarettes! What a victory, sure, they'll still be doing the unhealthy thing they were before, but they'll be SLIGHTLY INCONVENIENCED while they do it at least!

This is the part thats dumb. Its 19 here in Canada for the most part and teens get them from their older friends or sometimes even their parents. But Im sure this is a victory for someone.

Not useless. "they're still gonna find ways to do it!" isn't an argument against making it more difficult. Someone fresh out of HS, 18 years old usually has a different mentality than someone who is 21 and a few years matured....not everyone, but most are. Its more likely that 18 year old with a HS mentality who went to classes with some of those 14-15 year olds who are asking, will buy cigs are alcohol(if Alcohol was lowered to 18) for a HS teen than a 21 year old, I think....does it happen, yea, of course this won't completely stop that from happening. no law will stop anything from happening 100%....But i can see the benefit here and how it can reduce the number of times it does happen. Now that this is in place, you can start working on the next step. you get fewer teens addicted, fewer people growing up addicted, its a huge step in the direction that it sounds like you want to go, which is where we can get rid of them completely, or at least completely overhaul things in the tobacco industry....now unfortunately due to politics and lobbyists that's easier said than done, but a move like this is a step in the right direction. an attempt to help cut into the number of teens who get addicted and stay addicted for life. its worth a try and we'll see what the stats show on it. But like i said earlier, politics won't let us directly address the issue. we kinda have to start at a place like this and inch towards the better resolution.

You're dodging the point that you're using bad actors to justify removing freedoms and personal choice for all adults between 18 and 21

That's a bad, immoral practice and an awful precedent

punish the guys who deal to kids. dont just discriminate against a whole group of people

That is what they mostly do. Most jobs in the military aren't in direct combat. Especially if you go Navy or Air Force.

Navy has a lot of ITs, for example. They get some basic fundamentals training at A School, then on-the-job training at Sea or Shore duties, they can use NavyCOOL to earn a variety of certifications, or tuition assistance/GI Bill to go for a degree.

They also have electrical and mechanical engineers, nuclear engineers, foreign language translators, aviation mechanics, cooks, and so on.

Uh yeah I know there are a loy of jobs in the military outside combat. Shoulda worded it better I guess. They shouldnt deploy overseas where there is a chance for combat. I mean i knew a guy his job was repairing weapons and hes had 3 trucks blown out from under him in iraq
