I mean, I wouldn't call a 17 year old a 'kid' but he's not a legal adult either.

17 is legally adult in over half the US...
But certainly less mature than mid 20s people, but that's neither here nor there.

Less than half my age. I'd laugh too.

I call people up to age 24 kids a lot of the time.

Depends on how it was said to him.

"shut up you're just a kid", I understand his response

"this year at christmas dinner you're gonna be at the kids table", eh, still understand, but such an adverse reaction isn't necessary

also, some older people just call anyone younger than them "kid". watch any sport broadcast and the older announcers always say something like "you know this KID is gonna be something special" about 23 or 24 year olds...in that context, getting upset like that about being called a kid at 27 would be stupid.

I'm almost 26 and people refer to me as 'kid' or something like that practically every day. Some old lady the other day referred to me as 'young boy' and another guy who was no bigger than I am called me 'lil man' a few times

doesn't prove his point, it just goes along with his ASSERTION which is not proven. however the term "infantilization" is a strawman because no one is calling teens babbys. Also to add to that, whether or not one person is mature doesn't change the fact that teenagers feel a lot more mature than they are and are rightfully in most cases considered less mature than fully functioning mature adults.

infantilize
/infantilz/
verb
treat (someone) as a child or in a way which denies their maturity in age or experience.

So youre also uneducated although I dont expect anything less from someone who spams and posts like they have a mental age of 8.
you're being obtuse. a mature 17 year old would not shout aloud "I'm 17! I'm an adult!" Mature adults don't need to rant and rave about being adults. The teen isn't being denied his actual maturity level unfairly

Yeah. That's around that age where most of us had something to prove and craved adult independence.

A decade later most us realize how much easier things were, but I don't blame a late teen for wanting to be considered an adult.

you can be a mature kid. it doesn't mean you can't be considered a kid. there are 13 year olds who act more mature than 22 year olds. they're still considered kids in a sense. Older people will typically view most younger people, especially people still in their teens "kids"...it doesn't mean they think you're a baby and act like an immature 3 year old...its not something to get so offended over, dude...but past all that if your response to being called a "kid" is "NO IM NOT IM A MATURE ADULT"....you might not be as mature as you think you are.

No one considers themselves a "kid" at that age(Even though they are), so it's not unreasonable for someone to be at least annoyed by being called one. Especially if used in a way to dismiss them or their opinion.

More often than not it's angst. However I do believe a lot of older folks discount younger generations unfairly at times. We were all teens at one point. No need to have a false sense of superiority towards valuable individuals.

I mean, likewise. If youre so offended at the observation that people who infantile tend to be very immature for their age themselves and go THATS SOMETHING ONLY A KID WOULD SAY youre showing your own lack of self-awareness and proving me right.
I'm not offended by anything you said. I just don't think anyone ITT is "infantilizing" you or any other 17 year old. they're just explaining to you that maturity has nothing to do with it. Again, calling a 17 year old a kid doesn't mean you instantly view them as a baby or an infant. They're a kid. a teenage kid. That much is just a fact. You can be a very mature kid. You can be a kid who is vastly more mature than a 35 year old who calls you a kid...it doesn't change the fact that you're still, for the moment, a kid by definition. Since you like to use dictionary definitions...

Definition of kid (Entry 1 of 4)
1
: a young person
kids in high school
especially : CHILD
a married couple with two kids
often used as a generalized reference to one especially younger or less experienced
the kid on the pro golf tour
you poor kid

Its not a big deal, man.

Again, i can understand getting upset about it in certain contexts, like if you are a smart teen, giving a good argument, or debate, or idea, and someone says "you're just a KID what do you know?"...that's condescending and in that context its not about being called a kid, its about not being heard because you're younger...you're still a kid, though. The same adult could have said "you know, you got some good ideas, kid, lets roll with that one"....They still called you a kid but in that context they're not automatically dismissing you because of the fact that you're a kid.
