Southern Whites and Blacks called it "Spoken Word" back in the day. Up until the early 70s, baptist preachers used to sell records with a sermon and a "spoken word" routine accompanied by organ music. My great grandmother was the last to listen to this stuff.

The black version of this would be Gil Scott Herron and "The Revolution with Not be Televised."

It's different from the spoken word of today where it's a dramatic poem reading set to music. Rap came from New York Jamaican-American dance halls in the early 70s.
