Well one thing people are neglecting here is the season is not a full year and half of these games would be on their home grounds.

It's not 82 games on the road, it's 41 games on the road and 41 games at home + playoffs potentially.

Well, if your favorite team is local... If not, then it may be closer to 82 games on the road...

10% is what you can expect. 12% is a myth. That 10% comes 7% real after inflation. That 7% become a 4% withdrawal rate factoring in the downs of the stock market. But basically it lets you live on 40k a year (and then 15% tax on that), and if you live on less then it'll grow.

Oh, that also assumes you aren't taxed on the million. If you're taxed you're getting closer to 650k, meaning 4% withdrawal is a bit under 30k safe withdrawal rate.

True if you get taxed on the mill that would certainly mess things up. If you did get 40k though it's only about 8% interest on that (first 12k is not taxed, next 10k is only 10% and the rest is at 12%.

That averages out to 12% of 20k and 10% of 10k or $3400 out of $4000 (pretty close to 8%).

Meanwhile factoring in inflation etc, really doesn't make a difference in how much money you actually are gaining per year, it's just that money won't go as far (but it's still equivalent to a similar income).

You can actually get about 7% with a variety of fairly secure/safe bonds btw, which is more secure then using the stock market. While not quite as much, on 1 mill that is still 70k a year (forget inflation, it affects everything). This does mean paying significant taxes mind you, but it's the equivalent of having a 70k a year job basically (doesn't really matter where the money comes from).

In such a case sadly you'll end up paying significant taxes 0% on the first 12, 10% on the next 10, 12% on the next 30 and 22% on the last 20. That ends up being, about 8.5k in taxes total.

That still leaves you a good 62k a year to live on though (as long as your primary residence is in a state with no income taxes).

Certainly. Not matter what the schedule entailed: for $1+ million I'd make it work.

Oh in my response I mentioned trains and buses, but the rule is flight only. So I guess I'm booking a private helicopter ride to every match.

Yeah, but because of how games are scheduled, it's not like all the home games are lumped together in one bundle. Like I mentioned in my analysis earlier, you're still probably traveling about 50 times even without playoffs. The longest you'd ever be in one place for a home game stretch is 4-5 games (about 8-10 days), and there are times when you may fly in for one home game and have to fly right out again, giving you 2 days "home" tops.

What makes it so painful is that you really only get about two days or so in any given city before you have to go to the next one, so your life basically becomes "catch a flight, check in to a hotel, go to a game, stay a night or two, check out, catch a flight". For six months. With an occasional week break where you stay in the home city until the next spate of away games (which may not even be a plus if your "home" city isn't YOUR home, and isn't interesting in and of itself - you'd probably find more worthwhile things to do in your extra time in NYC or Vegas than you would in Winnipeg or Tampa, for example).

This - I live in NJ, but "my team" is the Avs. The home games would actually be farther away from my house than most of the away games. I'd still be living out of a hotel 82 games straight. I still wouldn't see my house or anyone in my life for six months.

Which, incidentally, is another problem with this scenario - if you're in a committed relationship/married (and god help you if you have kids), nothing in the rules says you get to take your partner with you, or that anyone would pay for their travel/hotel if they did. So you aren't just throwing away all of your normal life responsibilities and obligations (which may include whatever career you've managed to establish for yourself), you're basically abandoning your significant other for half a year.

Again, this deal is much more appealing if you're alone, doing odd jobs, and don't really have a place of your own. It gets a lot worse when you have family/friends, pets, a career you love, and have put down roots in one place, where seriously disrupting your life for six months can have negative ramifications for years to come.

20 year old me would have leapt at a deal like this. 40 year old me would tell you to go fuck yourself.

Besides the reasons ParanoidObsessive posted, there's also the fact that if you miss a game for any reason (even if it's one beyond your control), you don't get the money

I hate sports, but hey for 1 million dollars?! I'd do it for sure. Free travel expenses means I get to stay in hotels for free for an entire year, with free food and drinks! ;)
