First and foremost this movie is definitely mostly about the mentally ill. About how society neglects them.

I went in knowing this; Joker is a villain and a bad guy so no matter what this movie does to justify his actions, he's still no one to cheer and root for. The trailers implies that people and society has wronged him so his turn to villainy is okay, which is a great selling point because so many people feel this way but thankfully the movie doesn't try to feed this entirely. The movie does a good job of saying "just because you've been shit on or even have a handicap, it doesn't give you the right to become a scumbag". I liked that very much.
