People hail it as the best game in the series but it is short and boring. The level curve makes the game either hilariously easy or frustratingly hard with no in between. And the gym leaders (except Jasmine) are forgettable. Yeah it introduced series staples (gender, breeding, 2 types, and shinies) but it's still pretty bad.

But yes, the leveling curve is atrocious compared to literally every game in the series.

And just to head off the complaints about the leveling curve adding more challenge, difficulty should come from the fact that trainers have better composed teams with, more rounded and complex strategies. Not because you are 15 levels too low because all the other trainers are and wild Pokemon have pitiful levels, requiring excessive grinding to keep your level up.

It was amazing at time, but playing it now, there are definitely things about it that annoy me (that mostly remain in the remakes). The level curve, some of the cooler new Pokemon not being available until Kanto, the time-based mechanics (cool novelties initially, but annoying after that wore off), the small size of Johto (and a cut down Kanto not *really* making up for it, even if it was one of gaming's great surprises at the time), etc.

I disagree that those make the games "bad" though.

Johto has its flaws for sure, but it is an absolutely amazing sequel. I don't think any other game captured that feeling when you realize that Johto is only the first half. That moment I first stepped into Kanto, there's nothing like it.

It's amazing it was even possible due to how limited the gbc was. Now yes, things weren't perfect (Kanto had quite a few missing stuff), but I still feel it really recaptured the magic.

And at the very end of it all, after defeating all the old gym leaders and your old rival, the game gives you the perfect final challenge. The absolutely perfect final boss to a sequel.

So overall I loved G/S/C for all it did, even if it didn't do it perfectly.

The fact is though that Kanto holds the game back from it's full potential. Johto could have been amazing but they cut half of the games space to put in what amounts to a glorified nostalgia trip. Not saying Kanto was bad, it is one of my favorite regions, Gen 2 just didnt need it.

Kanto holds it back and it leaves both areas empty in the end mostly Kanto. They both hold each other back, I understand what they were trying to do but it didn't come out well. Imagine if Kanto was gone how much more would we have gotten into Johto?

Yeah really. Ill take it for Gold and Silver even though I love them but HeartGold and SoulSilver are tied with Black 2 and White 2 for the best games of the franchise.

When I crossed over into Kanto for the first time in Silver, I was in shock. I had never seen a game do that before. Even though it was only a small handful of years later, it was such a rush. I didn't feel nostalgia like that again until I played MGS4 and I walked into Shadow Moses.
