Are you military, or did you sign up for an airline rewards card?

No and no. I do have a government job though that needed a bunch of background checks.

Pre-check doesn't seem like something they should be just randomly giving out >____> I thought it means "Hey, we're sure you're not a threat, so you can go through security faster now"

Oh ok not even just airline rewards cards - https://www.moneytalksnews.com/17-ways-to-get-tsa-precheck-for-free/

Oh and apparently DoD civilians also get it. Generally you have to enter your known traveler number (CAC number) on a website when booking, or have it entered in your DTS profile when setting up orders, or use your ID at the airport when checking in and ask (some attendants are really mindful and will just offer it automatically if they see a CAC).

I use my frequent flyer numbers a lot. Is that why? Though I haven't flown in over a year

Yeah, I didn't think they still did it, but if you flew a lot at one time, they may have just enrolled you.

My parents and I got it for free for a flight to Hawaii a few years ago. Dont know how we got it cause it was our first flight in 4-5 years. The only thing we can think of was either they wanted to promote the service and gave it to us or because my brother is in the navy and they did background checks on us when he signed up. Sadly all our other flights after that trip, we didnt get it.
