They really should. I feel like I spent way too much time learning how to stop drop and roll and never spent any time learning about how money worked.

I haven't had to stop drop and roll so far.

True, but it also at least arms you with the knowledge to avoid making really stupid financial decisions purely out of ignorance.

Not the most surprising statistic, and it also understates the problem. Nearly 80% of Americans report living paycheck to paycheck. No one who lives paycheck to paycheck is going to have 100k in savings.
Indeed.

Took me 3 years to save $5,000.

And most is from tax returns and cashing in vacation time.

"Apparently 9 out of 10 Americans have less than $100,000 in savings"

We're missing key information here, like... what the age range is there. Because if it's like "9 out of 10 18-to-28 year old Americans have less than $100,000 in savings" I wouldn't be surprised. Also how are they defining "savings"?

That would hurt the colleges though.

There's a reason they don't educate you on finances.

100,000 in savings is a lot. I think you mean 1000.

If the average household income is 45 to 50,000, it would take a long time to save 100k.

We had to take this at our high school so I'm always surprised to hear this wasn't a thing at other schools.

I want to be clear, you know incomes are noted in gross and not net. People do not just get 40k per year in the clear. That 40k pays local, state, and federal taxes. Rent and mortgage. Food and healthcare. Transportation. Utilities

Even if you vacation in thr backyard, hitch hike, and avoid all entertainment for years, it is going to take a long time to save 100k.

100k is a lot of money for most people. When you consider the median income for an individual is between 30k and 40k that represents about 3 years pay.

A lot of people making those amounts can't afford to put any aside for savings. I barely manage to yet I make a bit less than 30k
