The town in Silent Hill 4 isn't actually Silent Hill. I don't think there was ever a clear explanation as to why Silent Hill was bleeding over but for the most part Silent Hill is a ghost town. The dark version of Silent Hill is the same "plane" the city itself actually transforms the deeper you go into it.

Laura doesn't think you're crazy or Eddie is crazy.

The town seems normal to her
To Eddie it's full of dogs and freezing
To Angella it's on fire and full of grotesque rape monsters
To James its what you see, foggy and full of effeminate creatures who hurt you but seem to be suffering themselves

As to what is real? They all are.

Silent Hill is all about multiple levels of reality occupying the same place.

As for Laura Its pure speculation on my part but we know she was sick in hospital, got better, was brought into town by Eddie (who was on the run) and can be adopted by James

so I'm guessing Laura was either an orphan (most likely)or has shitty parents and ran away from home to find Mary, the only mother figure she ever loved

On the run she met Eddie and asked him to take her there so he was like "gonna get me some of that tourist trap!" and so took her

That's just speculation though. Which I like, Silent Hill is very open ended and leaves you to speculate

I don't know if it's ever outright stated in any of the games, but this is the situation with Silent Hill:

  • The first level is the real world. Here, Silent Hill is just a nice little scenic tourist town. People live and shop and vacation here, the vast majority completely unaware of any supernatural shenanigans happening. Some people think this is the level that Laura was seeing, but I personally don't believe that.
  • The second level is the Fog World where the majority of the games take place. Monsters roam the town, doors are locked, roads are either blocked or fallen into bottomless chasms, that kinda thing. I think this is where Laura is, but she doesn't see things like monsters and corpses. She just sees a foggy, abandoned town.
  • The third level is the Otherworld. This is the level that alters itself to reflect a person's psyche. James watched his wife suffer in a hospital bed, so his Otherworld is full of stained sheets and gurneys. Angela was sexually abused by her father, so her Otherworld has pistons and the Abstract Daddy monster.

Which takes the mystique away a tad for me

Yeah again speculation but I think Luara is in the fog world too, it just seems normal to her.

She sees Eddie and James when they dont see "Normal " people walking the streets and she does things like graffiti walls and wander all over the place by herself which seems unlikely if there are people everywhere

Yes silent hill is a normal functioning tourist town in canon. It's why Harry decides to take Cheryl to SH on vacation in the first game.

It's not an abandoned town like in the movie.

the reality of the town the main characters are in is seperate from the reality of the town in real life. James isnt just walking around town shooting and hitting people or whatever. that makes no sense

in silent hill 1 alessa is ritualistically imbued with the powers of the town. she uses this ability to pull people in that games cast into the foggy world and the otherworld in order to protect herself from Dahlia and Kaufman. they seem to just be parts of the town themselves but since shes technically got the powers of a goddess she can use them

alessa is gone in sh2 but the other worlds are still there. in fact the lore laid out in that game suggests that they were always there and always affecting people in their own way long before the cult from SH1 and 3 started.

sh1 and 3 are what happens when the spooky stuff in silent hill is guided by other forces. SH2 is what happens when the place is left to its own devices. they can coexist pretty easily

Great game but lots of questions about whats actually happening...

Spoilers:

1. The town isn't empty, James is delusional.

2. Either yes or his mind finally comes to accept what he did I don't recall him ever confessing to Laura though

3. In the Leave ending, he does. Mary wants him to move forward & she wants the 2 people she loves to be together

As for Mary's body, it's supposed to be in the trunk or backseat of his car-- he takes it to perform a ritual in one of the secret endings, hoping to bring her back to life.
As for Maria's body, it likely disappears back into the mists.

What police investigation are you wondering about? If about Mary's death, she had a terminal disease & is thought to have died from it.

Hope that helps.

she's an orphan, so probably not many are looking for her. she traveled with Eddie, so it could appear to others that she is under his care, in some shape or form. and it's not unheard of for children to run away and roam unsupervised when they don't actually have a parent, guardian, or real caretaker.

there's a lot that isn't said, so we don't know the full story, but it doesn't seem all that implausible.

I actually agree with this.

The writers have stated that Mary's body was in the passenger seat of the car and I think that's just too silly. Especially in the Leave Ending with Laura

But I guess you can say James just didn't take that car home.

If it's any consolation, that ending is non canon. The canon ending is that James commits suicide by driving his car into the lake with Mary's corpse.

This is from the writers and also mentioned in SH4 by James' dad that James never returned.

Sucks for me because I think the suicide ending is the stupidest one. James goes through all that discovery and personal torment to learn the truth about himself just so he can kill himself? That's silly

And he just killed her so then who gave him the letter?

A nurse gave it to Laura so I assume a Nurse gave it to James. Mary was only just let out of hospital.

It's also possible Mary wrote it for James to read after she died. But the letter was written before Mary died obviously.

Whether or not Mary or the Nurse gave it to him really isn't important. It was written for him by Mary and given to him when Mary was discharged.

The games good but things taken literally are hard to line up in reality.

Meh, bits and pieces for artistic liscence.

For the most part it lines up pretty well. Especially for a surreal horror story. There's only a handful of things that make no sense at all from a "literal" perspective.

Sure but we dont see him drive off or go past police and act like nothing Is wrong

Presumably he either buries memory and them turns himself and Laura in

or buried mary/leaves her in the fog world and then adopts Laura, rather than making her sit behind the corpse

Either way is speculation but it's all a bananas dont float moment. The point is James' psyche and how he redeems himself in various ways

Walter is referenced a lot in SH4 as well as things that also pop up in Silent Hill 2 but they're only loosely connected.

There's a lot unexplained in Silent Hill 4 but it's implied that people visiting "Silent Hill" are actually staying in Ashfield and that there's dark mirrors that you pass through to get to the demonic parts of the city that most people don't see.

Henry's predicament kind of implies that Silent Hill is a real & personal hell. No matter how much he bangs on the wall or door or poltergeists fuck things up or tries to break out he can't and no one ever notices he's screaming for help even while they're looking into the peephole.

So the people in Ashfield by large literally don't even know they live next door to demons.

But even in the same circumstance id never kill a loved one. James clearly mentioned he wanted his life back and i view family/wife as my life even if i have to watch em through to the end.

They clearly hinted james had some selfish desires such as a more sexual Marry and tired of the mood swings so he snapped.

And also weirdly secluded with no other family or loved ones. Like my family and my wives family and friends would help me cope. Its odd James and Marry were so loners.
