I was watching Inside Edition and there was this story about a 93 year old man who shot some guy over something. He was polite, let the woman in the room leave without a fuss, fired a warning shot, and only shot the guy he was upset at in the legs instead of the chest or head.

The cops show up and just like always they were screaming hysterically "PuT The GUn dowN! PUt it DoWwwWN!!!" before one of them fired a shot at the old man faster than anyone reasonably could have responded to their inarticulate yelling. Thankfully it missed (they also have awful aim most of the time, huh?) but when the guy calmly put his gun down the officer still slammed him down to the ground to handcuff him.

Look I'm not saying shooting people is fine or that the old man was in the right for what he did, that's irrelevant. The issue I have is that it's like this 90% of the time when the cops respond to a crime, they scream, they shoot, they rough people up, why don't they just try talking to people like normal human beings instead of letting fear and adrenaline reduce them into animals with lethal weapons?

Most cops aren't bad people. Most cops DON'T want to pull their gun. Nor do they pull it. But why does it seem like cops like to use civilians for target practice? The media.

People don't care to hear about the mundane things. People want to listen to the bad stories.

The city closest to me has a total of 44 officers. That is including K9 units, FT/PT officers, civilians sworn in to act as officers in some capacity and DEC officers. Excluding the DEC, they cover an area of 4 sq miles and 18k people.

There have been 0 shootings by police as far back as I can find. People have shot at the cops, including one who barricaded himself in and had two hostages. He killed himself after an 18 hour standoff.

People have fought with cops, including a former friend of mine. He stole a car, broke into some homes to steal things, then led cops on a chase when they caught up to him. He crashed his car into a house, got out and started trying to fight them. 0 shots fired.

Cops are taught about "conflict escalation" and often just the appearance of an officer in uniform can bring it down a level. However; coming in already screaming mad to a bad situation only makes things worse. You can easily increase the levels in a conflict. Can't lower them that way.

There's definitely bad cops. There's cops who are good people and make bad decisions. There's good cops who make bad decisions. Any rational person is not in a hurry to possibly kill anyone. Look at the suicide rates on police who have taken a life.

Even if they don't succumb to depression of taking a life, it is often the loss of a career. Many aren't allowed to be officers anymore. All that training, everything they worked for is gone. The stigma is carried with them forever.

The cop in your story may have panicked, but you said the elderly man allegedly shot someone before. He may be old but bullets don't discriminate on who fired them, they'll kill equally. Just because it was in the leg doesn't mean he wouldn't turn around and put one into the cop.

Watch some of the videos of cops being shot. See how fast you can react, even if you know it's coming. From concealed to firing takes about a second. Remember: they have the drop on you

Im pretty sure that this is a troll topic... because I find it hard to believe that anyone would think that its wrong to be worried when someone is holding a gun.

You have a window of seconds to resolve a situation with an armed assailant. It's not cowardice, it's practicality. Cowardice is refusing to run into an area with an active shooter.

What is a alleged crook supposed to do when they have 2 or more cops all screaming different orders to them. Cops need to pick at just one of them to be barking orders at a perp. While they are at it cops also need to have just one or two level headed shooter cops in charge of deciding to shoot and have those be the only ones shooting a suspect if needed. As it is now every cop in range decides they should be shooting as well, causing death by cop firing squad.

Let me break this down to you. The cops dont know the circumstances when they show up, all they know is somebodies been shot and the shooter is still armed.

You think they're just going to calmly approach that person and ask them to please put the gun down? Lol, get in touch with reality my man.

Yeah because when multiple people are all shouting at the same time and training guns on you it's totally easy to understand them. It does help if some are shouting different orders though, which happens all the time thankfully.

Many murders and crimes in general involve alcohol, narcotics, or people in extreme emotional states. Hell even entirely sober people probably start getting nervous when they realize the cops are coming and there's a decent chance they'll be shot at. Clearly the perfect time to be as aggressive and menacing as possible, no?
