"Authorities in Mississippi say two men attempted to scam the state lottery commission by submitting a losing ticket that had the winning numbers glued onto it.

Odis Latham, 47, and Russell Sparks, 48, were arrested Monday and charged with offenses including uttering counterfeit instrument over $1,000.

The state lottery commission called Flowood police about the fake ticket earlier that morning, Sgt. Adam Nelson said. Officers were told the suspects presented an altered $100,000 ticket that appeared to have the winning numbers glued onto it.

The men, both of Columbus, were set to appear in court Tuesday. Its unclear if they have lawyers."

I don't know how it is in Mississippi, but here in Florida our state lottery has a specialized team of investigators that checks out every winning entry. This was never going to work.

LOL, you don't even have to scratch off the tickets. You can just run the bar code.
But then again...lottery people are not the brightest bunch.
It's ultimately a tax on the poor. A regressive tax.

You know what I meant.

TIL Frank Abagnale, played by DiCaprio in Catch Me if You Can, is still alive at 71.

Mississippi honestly isn't that bad, but you've got people like this always throwing that anchor through the hull all the time.

Doesn't help some tv shows and whatnot actually intentionally seek out the weirdos and will force all the normal ones out of an area to help perpetuate the image. Then again I remember all the cheering and bragging about teen pregnancy years ago like it was an accomplishment.

I'm pretty sure the lottery only just started recently in MS, but they probably had things set up to figure out it was a fake as they worked with other states to set it up for at least a year.

As for the bad idea? I can only assume it was to turn in the losing ticket and try to convince everyone the winning numbers were the wrong ones.

Didn't read the book but loved the movie. Anyway, Abagnale is still alive. You probably didn't need him to spot a ticket with glued on numbers though.

It's only a bit less stupid. Seriously, these guys were 48, 49 years old?

Someone once photocopied slot vouchers where I worked...I have to give them credit as they did scan.
But they were already redeemed so they weren't worth shit. Still getting the bar code size correct was impressive. I'm not sure if anything ever came of it after that.
