The World Wide Fund for Nature, or WWF (known in the US and Canada as the World Wildlife Fund), used Dickman's numbers to create its own sobering estimate that 1.25 billion animals may have been killed directly or indirectly by the fires.

A recent report in The New York Times notes that some experts are "dubious" about the numbers. There's naturally limited access to the burned areas, and the death toll is arrived not by counting individual animals, but through math -- multiplying the number of animals expected to inhabit a given area by the total acreage burned.

They are bred for the purpose of being food. If they weren't butchered they wouldn't exist. It's slightly different compared to the possibility that some species of animal are now entirely extinct due to these fires.

I don't disagree with your points mate, the meat industry is awful and a factor in what's happening.

If you had the ability to read and not just only play up the angry vegan stereotype, what I was saying is that you are only adding to why people want to mock us with the way and where you bring it up. There are far better ways to use it than belittling and being a dick about it.

FFS, could just use their empathy about animals which people clearly have to agree with them that the senseless loss is tragic. Help them see that they already realise it and take steps after rather than going "ACHTUALLY".

NO ONE likes people who come up in the middle of a tragedy and then start talking about another horrific thing.

Being factually correct has nothing to do with the false equivalence being drawn here.

There's a really big difference which animals are dying. One is predominantly a whole ecosystem of wildlife, many of which don't exist anywhere else in the world, many of which were already endangered, being killed by the millions along with their homes, and the other is a bunch of domesticated animals that are Least Concern conservation status.

While the meat industry does contribute to the climate change that caused this fire which is a totally valid argument, you can't simply tally death counts like there's no difference in the value of the animals lives.
