There are so many choices and I don't even know what to look for. PIA, Nord, etc.

Until now I've been happy with short-term free sessions like SoftEther nodes.

ProtonVPN is solid. A little more expensive than the alternatives but they are a straightforward no BS company. You can try it for free to see how it works for you (free has some speed caps and you can only connect to I believe three locations, but there are no bandwidth limits so you can theoretically use it indefinitely).

Plus I don't know if they'll do it again, but Proton gave me free stuff for being an early adopter (I use ProtonMail, they gave me 5 free GB of storage space and on ProtonVPN they gave me a license to use it on two additional devices).

Mullvad is also supposed to be pretty good - they take privacy so seriously you can literally pay with cash to remain as anonymous as possible.
