There's been some pushes to present some historical figures closer to what they actually were rather than the idolized way they're sometimes presented. Christopher Columbus is one such figure.

But when it comes to Sparta maybe people bring up the helots but generally the way they are portrayed in popular culture is pretty positive. They're often portrayed as these badass heroic warriors who stood their ground at Thermopylae to save a young western civilization from the claws of oriental depotism. But just like Christopher Columbus wasn't just this brave explorer who found the new world, the actual Spartans hardly live up to their idolized image. Even Thermopylae wasn't a heroic last stand but more of a half assed defence of Atika by the Spartans and their last stand was more of a suicide than a last stand. Make no mistake, our sources do not paint the action of the 300, and other Greeks including Helots who were forced to give up their lives among their Spartan masters, as trying to buy the Greek coalition time.

There's this really good blog series that goes over the idealized portrayal of Sparta and points out of Sparta actually was:
https://acoup.blog/2019/08/16/collections-this-isnt-sparta-part-i-spartan-school/

To cut it short the Spartans weren't heroic badass warriors and more like a bunch of rich assholes who had a system of government that only the rich had power and the richer got richer. Their militia was slightly above that of the other Greeks but not impressive at all since most Classical Greek militias were poorly organized. Like the blog points out in the beginning, Sparta is still fondly remembered to this day despite it being a pretty terrible place to hold in high regards.

Just got done reading that blog and I have to say it's a great read. To my mind what it boils down too is that the Spartans benefited from some really great PR/Marketing and were canny enough (or just had the personality) to really lean in to it.

On a side note Sparta's fate is kind of reminiscent of how the bully is punished in an 80's movie.

so literally the same as every other system of government that has ever existed

True, but Sparta took it an extreme degree. As the blog the TC links points out being a Slave back then sucked, but being a Slave of Sparta was so bad that other Slave Owners of the time commented on just how horrible Sparta treated their slaves.

Yeah, this.

Outside of 300 memes, nobody I know thinks highly of actual Spartans. Shit, some of those same people didn't even know they were a real people, again, because 300 made them seem too outlandish to be real.

Thermopylae and defeating Athens in the Peloponnesian war will kind of leave a mark in the history books.
