Got the Motorola Droid as my first smartphone on February 8, 2010. So almost exactly ten years. Every time I've been due for an upgrade I briefly consider switching to iPhone.

I upgraded to the Motorola Droid RAZR, followed by the HTC One M7, then the Motorola Droid Turbo 2, and now the Samsung Galaxy S9. It's been paid off for over a year and isn't currently giving me any trouble, so right now curiosity is the only thing making me consider switching to Apple.

Fellow CEople who were long time users of Android and switched: what do you like? What do you regret?

Same question for those who switched the other way: long time Apple users now on Android. What do you prefer now about your Android and miss from your iPhone?

The 5S just stopped getting support last year. It came out in 2013.

Meanwhile the Galaxy S8 stopped getting support last year. It came out in 2017.

Apple has been fairly accepting of integration with other apps and in general the stability has been great across all models so far.

Back when the iphone 6 came out, it was better than most Androids on the market

I dont think theres been an argument the past few years since the 7, their product is trash, its more of a fashion staement to own an iphone I guess, thats a plus if you want to look a certain way.

• if you fuck up your phone you can go to the apple store and have them fix it in an hour, rather than having to mail your phone to Taiwan for two weeks or something
• every store will sell accessories and chargers for an iphone
• when you ask if someone has a charger you can actually charge your phone instead of trying to explain what USB-C is
• apps look better

All of my friends and family have iphones.

My wife is pressuring me to switch to iPhone because whenever she sends videos of our daughter they get all grainy and compressed.

I have 2 phones. I'd like my work phone to be an iPhone and keep my personal phone android.

Only weirdos facetime, but whatsapp has it, and I dont buy that their proprietary charger is more accessible. Iphone will move to usb c eventually onces their dongle sales slow down.

I do like that bit about fixing the phone quickly though. This is my second S9, the first one stopped holding a charge. Was a free warranty replacement but it still took a couple days for the new one to arrive and switching everything over to the new phone wasn't nearly as seamless as I had hoped.

That's not true though?
I had a Note 2 for 7 years and it constantly received updates.

On-topic; why would anyone try to convince you to use something worse than you already are?

Also, if your battery is an issue just buy a new one and install it yourself. They're like $20 and it's incredibly easy to replace on all Samsung phones.

Your S9 will obviously still get support in the form of security patches and core app updates through the Play Store. In fact, the January 2020 patch was just put out for the S9 and the 2017 Note 8. You will no longer get Android OS updates as Samsung caps them after 2 years, but that really shouldn't matter as the One UI skin is more feature laden than stock Android.

The security patches (which frankly are more important) will continue for several years at least. Even the 2016 S7 devices are still on a quarterly schedule.

I'm not missing jack from the iPhone. My wife has an 11 Pro Max and I've had plenty of seat time with it.

No guarantees, but it doesn't bode very well.

People keep saying to install custom ROMs and other stuff, but I suppose the #1 question is: do you want a constant reliable backup of your phone in case something goes wrong? I had to flash a backup on my Android; on iPhone I just do an iCloud backup.

Security updates are no substitute for features. The main reason people root their Androids is because there's usually something still missing from their experience. And that's even assuming the bootloader is accessible; I remember my S7 Edge not being able to do so on US carriers. All for...what? A few emulators that run pirated games? Android is starting to emulate iOS more and more because the software features are what people care about above all.

Do you mean rooting to play emulators or using Android to play emulators. The former being completely unnecessary, and the latter is not the reason people use Android, even if it is an added benefit for a tiny few.

And iOS emulates Android more and more. Because yes, features matter. And since neither side is perfect they steal and improve on each other's ideas. It's been a benefit for both ecosystems. I hope that Google and Apple continue to take from the other what they feel will improve the experience for their users.

I went there other direction. While my first smart phone was technically a T-Mobile sidekick II, I went from that to iPhone 3G and the experience was so horrible I switched to Android and never b looked back.

Both OSes are mature enough that each new version only offers incremental improvements over the last. I've used both iOS 12 to 13 and Android 9 to 10, and I have to squint to see any serious improvement or features.

The big thing as of late is a system-wide dark mode, which Samsung already had in Android 9. Stock Android and iOS played catch up afterwards.

I can't say for certain since I haven't used an iOS product since getting my S10, but I found a lot of my Android apps to be inferior to their iOS versions.

If you have a Mac, prefer premium paid apps, (arguably) better support and warenty go apple. There phones are also generally smoother and more.optimised
