Well, I beat the game.

Technically, anyway. I crashed into the gate after beating Zelos. That's a real neat trick to rob the player of a sense of victory after beating one of the most ridiculous games on the NES. I didn't even get a chance to redeem myself. By the time the ship respawned, I was in the safety zone.

Fuck you, Konami. I beat the boss. That means beating the game.

It's like crashing your bike in the stunt course on Paperboy. You still beat the game, but you don't feel a sense of victory. I'm gonna go back and beat the Brain Golem again, then shut the game off.

I like crashing before the course even officially starts

It took me twenty years to beat this game and I crash into the final wall on making my escape.

I did beat the final boss without taking a hit, so that's gotta count for something. It's stupid that they make you run another speed course though.

Like, put that before the final boss if that needs to be in the game. The player should never respawn to victory. If you wanna be a world class asshole programmer, make it so that crashing while escaping unlocks a bad ending, but don't ever put the player in a spot where they died, respawn, and are greeted with victory. That's a worse insult than losing.

Oh, wow. When the game starts over, it's even harder. The death hands are throwing projectiles now.

escaping the Death Star at the end of Super ROTJ was pretty bs too

I mean, I see why they included that. But yeah. It wasn't the best level.

It's doable with practice, but I consider the game finished when you kill the Emperor

but then, you don't hear the digitized 'Yub Nub' theme if you don't do the final stages
:/

Thanks.

The hardest part for me was in figuring out the safest way to avoid the flames in the third stage. My natural instinct is to stay toward the back of the screen to anticipate enemy attacks from the other side. This level forces you to stay near the front if you want to stay alive. Even on this last play-through, the fire stage was the most fear-inducing for me.

Lifeforce was one of two games which scared me.

The other is Battletoads. I made it to Volkmire's Inferno before tapping out. I may try and tackle that one next. I may go with Comix Zone. That's another one I've never beaten.

I can usually get as far as Clinger Winger, but that damn orb... you have to be fucking perfect to stay ahead of it

Not to mention being impossible on 2 player

Yeah. That's a pretty massive glitch. They probably had no idea about it because they were too busy knocking each other into spikes and off of ledges to make it that far.

Well, I tried it again and the same thing happened. Almost like watching a replay.

I beat the final boss without a hitch, then crash into the gate only to be declared the winner. If the game thinks crashing and burning with lives to spare means you win, who am I to argue? I've beaten the game twice now.

i never got past level 3 but then a friend and i played through it, beat the final boss, and one of us accidentally knocked into the desk and jolted the NES, making it reset lmao

so hey at least you did better than we did

The solar flares are the worst part of the game. I died three times against them on this most recent play through. Stages 3 and 6 were the only ones I lost lives on.

It helps to be close to the front of the screen, but your timing has to be perfect. If you're caught in the wrong spot, you're losing one or more lives.

ha, you mentioning level 3 is what triggered the memory.

i probably haven't played the game in 15 years. i listen to the soundtrack from time to time.

The boss theme is one that'll really get you pumped:
