After a few seconds they vanish forever unless you touch them again.

If you then get hit again without having any rings in your aura, you die, instantly. No matter how minor the problem was. From a cat scratch to lung cancer.

So on the one hand if you have rings you could survive getting point blank shot in the face or getting throat cancer.

On the other hand if you're ever caught short on rings even a small child running up in the street and playfully kicking you in the shin would be immediately fatal.
