Live NFL Draft

This is a 7-round affair where teams select college players. There are 32 picks in each round for a total of 224 selections overall. We break this down into three real-life days. Rounds 1 and 2 are on the first day, rounds 3 and 4 are on the second day, and rounds 5 through 7 are the final day. The draft takes place in the spreadsheet as that is where all the info is, and I totally failed in my lone attempt to do a draft in both the spreadsheet and Discord.

In one of the posts below, I will include the draft order again as well as updated draft pick ownerships. I only include ownership of other teams' picks. If you wish to attend the draft at all, I require that you own a Google account and either PM me or post here the email associated with it so that I can include you as having permission in the spreadsheet and you can sign in and enter the chat function which is located near the top right of the spreadsheet. Most of you have done so in previous years, but there could be a few people wanting to attend this year but have yet to receive permission. You must be on a desktop/laptop to access the chat function.

NFL Draft Rules

1. When it is your time to pick, post your selection in the spreadsheet

2. 5 minute pick limit, which starts when I say something along the lines of "X team is on the clock"

3. If no pick has been made after 5 minutes, I will select the player for you

4. If a user is not present at the time they are on the clock, they will be auto-drafted via rule #3 until they notify me

If I can't or dont want to be here for the draft, what are my options?

Queue - You give me a list of players in order of priority. It can be as few as one and as many as the 250+ prospects that will eventually be in that sheet.

Draft Strategy - You give me a vague or specific set of instructions on how to draft your players. An example of this would be

Draft best available CB in 1st round
Draft best available player in 2nd-4th rounds
Draft best available player for a position of need in 5th-7th rounds.

Conditionals - You give me a list of conditionals. Unlike the other two examples, this one is best used if you only think that you will be unavailable for a single round. Using HB Duke Johnson as an example:
1. Draft HB Duke Johnson
2. Draft the best available DE with a 1st round grade
3. Draft the best available player for a position of need

I do prefer that everyone, even if they plan to attend the draft on any or all days, send me something from the above list. So the draft runs smoothly, I create a spreadsheet where I create detailed draft plans for all user teams in case I have to draft for them. If I am given a strategy/queue/conditional (especially one that encompasses the entire draft) from a team, then I do not have to waste my time and effort for said team.

I want to remind everyone of trade reform that went into effect last season. After years of watching users make bad trades and as a result seeing AI teams make a comeback and generally do better than their user counterpart, I finally got some clarity to the why, and I brainstormed with other users to come up with a new trading system.

The peer review system is gone and replaced by a more thorough and transparent one that starts with the trade partners, then me, and ultimately the rest of the league.

1. Begin trade discussions like you normally do, and do not be afraid to ask me for my opinion or for additional info. I'm the expert and historian here. It's what I'm here for.

2. Ensure that all trade discussions include the positions, player ages, financial impact, player performance, what each user involved is expecting to get out of the trade, and anything else you feel is relevant. If no player is involved, the last two talking points still stand.

3. I want both parties to contact me via PM or Discord DM with the full trade details and demonstrate that they understand what they are getting into (things listed above).

4. I will use my discretion in regards to follow-up questions/responses.

5. If I feel everything checks out, I will post the trade and its details (along with some explanation), and it becomes official.

49ers receive:

49ers incur a $3.16 mil cap hit next season to turn an originally $4.47 mil cap hit into $7.08 mil this season
Pats incur a $3.66 mil cap hit next season to turn an originally $8.30 mil cap hit into $2.89 mil

The 49ers would like to go back to a balanced/pocket QB, and given their cap space and need for a WR after Andre Johnson's retirement, they get what they want.

The Pats have cap space issues, and given Leggett's production hasn't matched his contract, he was the player Jukkie put on the trade block. This frees roughly $5.5 mil in cap space they can use toward rookies/free agency, and they get a starting-caliber QB in Cam Newton on a deeply discounted contract.

Both parties, sort of (I was shown some screenshots that suggested as much), demonstrated they knew what both sides wanted and what the financial implications were. The trade is official.

Pioneers incur a $1.01 mil cap penalty next season to make an originally $4.25 mil cap hit into $4.37 mil
Steelers incur a $2.26 mil cap penalty next season to make an originally $5.50 mil cap hit into $3.24 mil

The Pioneers are under new management and had no plans on continuing to have Bell as their starter. He had posted roughly 5.0 YPC as a backup in his first two seasons, but he had dipped to under 4.0 in his half-season as a starter last season for a Pioneers offense that cratered. G Andy Christensen isn't exactly a good fit for the Pioneers, and he has a career line of 110 blocks to 27 sacks allowed, but he can be a swing OL when injuries occur. They essentially did this to buy a pick upgrade as new management continues to remake the team in their image.

The Steelers were looking to unload Christensen, and they did so at little risk. They saved a little over $2 mil in cap space and added a high-end HB backup at a fraction of what someone of his rating would cost on the market. Given incumbent Jamario Thomas' injury history, there is a path here to where Bell is ultimately Jamario's successor. At worst, they get a high-end backup for a season for a player they didn't want, cap relief, and trading back one round from the end of the 2nd to the end of the 3rd.

Both parties were aware of the financial implications, player performances, and what each side were looking for in a trade. This trade is now official.

Also, I am considering next season opening up AI trades a little. Currently, you can only trade players for players. I am opening up to the idea of allowing pure pick trades (aka draft picks for draft picks, and not players for picks or vice-versa). This would only be open in the offseason when exact draft pick placements are known and future draft picks are off-limits, for obvious reasons.

I like the idea. Sometimes it sucks when you want to move up or back but the next user team is like 10 spots away. Or there's any inactive GM sandwiched between a number of AI teams and getting them to respond isn't always easy. Plus with you'd have to okay an trades anyway so I don't see the problem with it.

Yeah I'd love to be able to offer AI draft picks for draft picks trades, in terms of actually being able to do things in the draft.

How exactly would it work? I don't know what logic the AI uses to draft guys, but what if they were trading away a higher 1st rounder when they had a hole they could fill with it (I guess this mostly applies when we know the draft board, but might also apply if someone was trading up a few spots from like 8 to 5 or something, too)?

Also, what would be the standard for trading up or trading down with an AI?

It would be harder to trade down with AI than trade up with AI because the AI likely wouldn't want to give up much. However, there is no way to ultimately predict what an AI will do with a pick, so it all comes down to context and using common sense.

Aren't you picking at like 8? So for your 1st round pick at least, you only need a maximum of 8 names in total.

That's kind of what I meant by shoot myself in the foot. There are definitely not 8 people I'd be ok with drafting at number 8, and I'd rather KCF use his greater depth of knowledge when using that pick for me than draft a guy that will do nothing for me with the 8th pick.

Thinking about this more, maybe I should add to my plan to specify what I definitely do not want to take (though I think KCF probably knows based on recent PMs what I'm thinking there).

This all of course presumes some disastrous situation occurs where I can't be there tomorrow, and obviously I do intend to be there.

Very much agree with your assessment of Mitchell Trubisky towards the end lol. As a Bears fan, it's insanely frustrating. The amount of times I'm reminded of Mahomes and Watson is rage-inducing.
