There's an outdoor cat that roams around and comes to visit every day. The cat is very timid, and never comes close. I want to feed it and take care of it (e.g. Provide a heated box for it to sleep in).

I'm thinking this cat can help steer potential mice and other pests away from my house, so it'll be like a win-win.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this? I don't think I thought this through too well.

It'll take its friends to your house, and then you have to feed them too.

I thought cats are lone hunters by nature.

Find out if it belongs to someone first. If you can't find anyone to claim it, befriend it and take it to the vet and if it is a female FIX IT. If you don't and you do end up caring for it you'll regret it when you're overrun with kittens that then grow up and get pregnant.

If it's a female you're screwed.

my neighbor across the street did that, and now he has a few cats that come to hang around, but he said it's worth it because it keeps the number of rodents and frogs down (we live close to a creek)

Yes females even if fixed will attract males a couple times a year, but they usually leave after mating season in my experience.

This. I had an indoor cat turned outdoor and I kept finding strange cats in my house where he let them in.

Some of them got aggressive and even tried to attack me. So, yes, there is a downside.

other animals will eat the food, too, if you aren't careful. I've seen raccoons, skunks, possums all eat it. Maybe squirrels and chipmunks, too.

That's exactly what I want. My outdoor cameras catch mice/rats, raccoons, and possums occasionally, and I want this cat to stick around so it keeps those vermins away.

i can tolerate those. not so much the other stuff.
used to feed the outdoor cat who lived next door when it's owners went away. but later found out a neighbor across the street poisoned her grass so the cat ended up dying.

it was a pretty orange striped tabby.

By feeding a couple times a day at around the same time and not overfeeding. The cat will get used to those couple times a day and will be ready for you to feed it at those times.

Though there's bound to still be a possum or racoon or whatever that'll come around occasionally.

Edit: I don't think the cat will chase off possums or racoons. At least mine don't. Mine will eat with them lol

How do I "tell" the cat it's time to eat? The cat seems to come around at random times...

It'll just get used to it over time. It'll figure out "oh it's this part of the day they probably have food at that one spot."
