Why does it always have to be a god/thing thats the amalgamation of all of humanities [Thing]

P5s combat was still some of the best turn based stuff Ive ever played ever, tho. Going through battles in FFX-2 really brings to light how difficult it is to make a turn based game feel as snappy as P5

This is one of the reasons why I don't play the SMT series.

I've only played P3-P5 and it's
AWAYS God. That's kind of their calling card.

But it does seem like a SMT thing considering you can make pacts with demons.

You spend the entirety of 95% of any SMT game recruiting minor demons to kill bigger demons to recruit them to kill angels and lesser gods, and recruit those angels and gods to either kill YHWH/the Demiurge or Lucifer or Lucifer's chosen champion.

The series emblem for SMT is a stylised pentagram, what are you really expecting by Endgame, Bowser standing on a bridge?

Well there are forks in the series. There's the pure mainline SMT games, the numbered ones, but there's also the Persona, Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, and Digital Devil Saga forks. There were also the two MMO's, Strange Journey, Last Bible, Demikids, a mobile game, and I might be forgetting a few minor titles along the way. There's a chibi action platformer in there somewhere iirc too.

This just makes me happy the 1980s and early 1990s are over, when the looming threat of de facto theocracy was around the corner and companies bowed in terror to theocrats and would never release a game like this.

Yeah that's kinda SMTs whole thang, if it helps any most of the games are about you siding with either chaos, law or nuetral so a great many of the games give you the option to actually side with god

It's not that killing God bothers me, its that every Persona ending from 3 on plays out the exact same, defeat real world villain, discover theres an evil God masterminding everything for no reason and then use the power of friendship to defeat it. You can swap out the endings of 4-5 and literally nothing changes.

Like goddanm does the Persona team have any writing originality?

Is there any music track in 3, 4 or 5 that isn't interchangeable with another in 3, 4 or 5?

My pet peeve has always been that Strange Journey was more deserving of the title of SMT IV than actual SMT IV was, and every ending for IV was a long ride on a short bus.

And I still have no idea what DDS was as a whole.

And we still haven't seen the third Raidou game...

Ok, I love Nocturne and the Raidou games but I have a lot of issues with SMT all around...

What I don't get is why they never seem to make the final boss the devil. I mean, it's like... literally his thing. He's just standing there, already set up to be the perfect final boss, Prince of Lies, Former Leader of the Archangels, King of Hell, and everything else... and they decide to tackle God instead?

My reigning theory on this is that Japan probably doesn't see demons as being 'final boss' level material and has demons tap out basically at upper-mid/upper monster power. Powerful but not 'final boss' powerful. So instead you gotta throw some actual deity as the final boss. Even if it results in western audiences wondering why he doesn't just Thanos-snap the party out of existence.

Massive spoilers for P3, P4, and P5

Nyx was Death given a physical vessel, not a representation of God. Your MC was a Jesus analogue...overcame death and sacrificed himself for a world that didn't appreciate him. You don't even come close to killing a God in this story...

Izanami was a clusterfuck of ideas that didn't coincide with her original folklore. P4 should have ended with the human antagonist, period.

Persona 5's entire plot was all about saying "Fuck you, I won't do what ya tell me!" to figures of high authority that impose unfair expectations of behavior on the main cast. There is no more fitting of a final confrontation than Yaldabaoth. They aren't trying to kill God here for the sake of killing a God; they are proving that they don't need what Yaldabaoth or The Holy Grail are offering in order to live a fulfilling life. It is the moment where their rebellion matures into justice.

SMTIV Apocalypse and Nocturne are far bigger offendors of this trope, as well as Xenoblade, than the Persona series. <_<

Anime tropes are terrible in general with this problem, where if you see how a character looks and know little about them you may know exactly how they will react to every situation; cookie cutter cardboard stereotypes with copy/paste "depth."

I love JRPGs, but they really need to try to break from expected clichs and character templates.

SMT:N spoilers

Lucifer is literally the canon super boss of SMT:N and the associated True Demon Ending is the official ending. Later appearances of Hitoshura (the "nameless" protagonist of Nocturne) as a superboss in later games are all based on the True Demon Ending being official. There are very specific and narrow requirements in game to get that ending, and a very specific skill set is required to win the fight with Lucifer. All things SMT post-Nocturne take place in the world Hitoshura creates at the end of Nocturne. When you encounter him as a superboss in later games, the fight music is the normal mob battle theme from Nocturne because you're in *HIS* world and you're just another trash mob to him. He also doesn't hesitate to summon some of the highest level demons and angels like Metatron or Beezlebub either.

Lucifer/Satan is almost always the final boss if you choose Law/Neutral in SMT games, in Nocturne he was the final boss of the intended ending.

That's very very true, probably one of the reasons I stopped watching Anime.

Yes.
I actually haven't played Strange Journey so maybe.
DDS was an unfinished mess but it still has mt favorite progression system.
I didn't like the Raidou games, too simple with bad controls.

Yeah there are alot of issues, I still love the games though even with the stupid endings Persona and SMT games are some of my favorite of all time.
