I've never really done one of these rankings with write ups topics but this one seems fun and self serving at the same time, so let's do it!

Inspiration: The other day I was watching a speedrun of a popular game and I thought to myself, "You know, there's really no good reason that I've never played this game. It's inexcusable, honestly." That got me thinking, and I started putting together a list of games that it's total bullshit that I haven't played them yet in the year 2020. Games which, if you knew me and my tastes very well, you'd consider it a safe assumption that yeah I totally played that game, but for whatever reason, I didn't.

Criteria: The reasoning for each game making the list can vary. It's not just critically acclaimed or top selling games. Rather, just games that, when I look back over time, considering my tastes, the consoles I owned, the amount of free time I had in life when it came out, etc. it's just like "how did I never play this?". Games that younger me would be ashamed or angry that older me never played them.

So generally, games on this list fall under one or more of these descriptions:

-"classic" games in a genre I like, which were either launch titles or near launch titles on a console I owned for its entire lifespan

-entries in a series which I love and have played all or mostly all the other entries except that one

-predecessors to games I put hundreds or even thousands of hours into, and I just never bothered looking back at the older games in the series which led to their creation

-sequels to games I loved and it's just really questionable as to why I didn't bother to check out for whatever reason

-games based on other IP that I love and for no good reason never bothered giving a chance

The list is made, so I'll start the write ups now! Woo hoo let's go.

20. Quest 64

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ae/Quest64_big.jpg

Initial release date: June 1, 1998
Developer: Imagineer
Platform: Nintendo 64
Publishers: Konami, THQ, Imagineer

You know, I'm sure the game probably isn't that good. It has a 5.9 on IGN. But like, I always saw it at the video store when I would rent games back in the day. How many countless times must I have passed this over for something else? 100? 200? And why? I love RPGs. I was every bit as excited as Nintendo 64 Kid when I opened mine on Christmas. I played it religiously. I must have played 100 N64 titles or more, and yet this one was always overlooked. It just doesn't make sense! I mean, look at that cover art. It's got a magical glowing staff thing. And a man-bear-pig with a spiked mace. And a freakin' dragon! It's a shame this game never earned even a single renting. Even to this day, every time I see the cover art for that game I think to myself "I should play that one day."

19. Minecraft

Initial release date: May 17, 2009
Composer: Daniel Rosenfeld
Developers: Mojang, Markus Persson, 4J Studios, Other Ocean Interactive, Xbox Game Studios
Designers: Markus Persson, Jens Bergensten

At first, I didn't want to add Minecraft to the list. But the more I got to thinking about the reasons why I didn't want to put it on the list, the more I realized it actually did deserve a spot. Because, honestly, the biggest reason I haven't played Minecraft is just straight up hipster mentality. It got super popular really fast and a bunch of people insisted that I play it, and I was coming into my own around the age of 20 or so, and I was just like "no, it's probably not even that good." Exactly the same reasoning I haven't watched Game of Thrones. Like it's a really dumb attitude to have, and I don't even try to hide that any more. Minecraft is basically the ultimate sandbox, which in every regard should be my favorite thing ever. Like, when I play open world RPGs I am the type who does 99 hours of side quests before I go to the second step of the main quest. I love to just get lost and explore in games. So why the hell would I not play Minecraft? I'm just too cool for it, I guess.

18. Fallout (series)

First release: Fallout; October 10, 1997
Latest release: Fallout 76; November 14, 2018
Designers: Todd Howard, Chris Avellone, Tim Cain, Josh Sawyer, MORE
Developers: Bethesda Softworks, Obsidian Entertainment, MORE
Publishers: Bethesda Softworks, Interplay Entertainment, MORE

The first of a few entries on this list which will refer to an entire series. The biggest justification for this one is simply my love of Elder Scrolls. I know the whole "Elder Scrolls with guns / Fallout with swords" thing isn't exactly accurate in a 1:1 way, but...still. Never even picked one up and tried it? Considering I've definitely put 1,000 hours into Elder Scrolls, that's just a bit silly. I have no doubts that I would lose myself in this world, too. One of the bigger reasons I haven't played it yet has a lot to do with the fact that I just don't tend to like FPS games in any capacity, even if there are lots of RPG elements to help it out. That, coupled with the fact that my main reason for wanting to try it out is dependent on an entirely different series altogether, are what give it such a low spot. It beats out Quest 64 and Minecraft just based on the fact I'm sure the depth of my enjoyment from this one would be greater if I did actually get around to it.

17. Luigi's Mansion

Initial release date: September 14, 2001
Composer: Kazumi Totaka
Genre: Action-adventure game
Developers: Nintendo, Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development, Grezzo
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS, GameCube

I owned a GameCube, and when I was a kid I always liked playing as Luigi in games more than I liked playing as Mario. And I played every Mario game I could get my hands on. So...why didn't I play a game that featured Luigi as the main character? Just doesn't make sense. I strangely don't even know anything about the game at all. Like, not even a vague familiarity. All I know about it is that's the game the vacuum comes from and there's that one old bald dude. That's it. I really should get around to this one.

16. Harry Potter (series)

Developers: A lot
Publishers: A lot
Platforms: A lot

Just...why not? Chances are these games are not earth-shatteringly amazing, but hell with such a fun world that I love so much, it would take some impressive degrees of failure to make these games be unenjoyable for me. I remember I did rent the very first one for the PlayStation one time, and I vaguely recall that I liked it, but I only played it for a couple hours so I'm still including this on the list. In the same way that the new Fantastic Beasts movies are just plain fun, I'm sure these video games would be just plain fun as well. I'm not such a superfan that if something with the story was inconsistent I would get bent out of shape. Just considering their vast coverage of consoles and years being published, it's pretty crazy to me that I never played a single one of these. Like, there is (I'm assuming~) virtual quidditch in the world, and I haven't partaken yet? What the hell, man.

15. Paper Mario

Initial release date: August 11, 2000
Composer: Yuka Tsujiyoko
Director(s): Ryota Kawade; Toshitaka Muramatsu; Takahiro Ogi; Hironobu Suzuki
Writer(s): Kumiko Takeda; Kaori Aoki
Developers: Nintendo, Intelligent Systems

I can't really put my finger on how or why I never played this game. Love Mario, love N64, love RPGs, loved SMRPG on SNES, this game had a cool new gimmick with the graphics, my friends talked about it, I just...idk? It never happened for some reason. Then when TTYD came out for GameCube, I thought it looked super awesome, but for whatever reason I always told myself I should play the first PM before I played TTYD, and I never got around to PM so I never played the sequel either. It's just dumb and I have no excuse. This one gets higher on the list than Luigi's Mansion and Quest 64 by virtue of the fact that when I consider them on a whim, this is the one I actually would want to play the most.

14. Golden Sun

Initial release date: August 1, 2001
Composer: Motoi Sakuraba
Developer: Camelot Software Planning

This one I have a somewhat more concrete reason for never having played before. The video store closest to where I lived didn't rent handheld games, and around this era I just didn't have money of my own to buy games nor did I really make any effort to keep up with what games were coming out. Most of what I heard was through word of mouth at school. I had one friend who LOVED this game and played it every day at school for like an entire semester and he talked about it all the time. I thought it seemed kinda neat but for whatever reason his passion for it was so over the top that it almost weirded me out a bit and I was like half afraid to play it for some dumb reason that made sense to an 11 year old. Looking back, the GBA era was really fantastic and I need to get around to this one before I die.

13. Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Initial release date: September 13, 2014
Composer: Junichi Nakatsuru
Developers: BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, Sora Ltd., BANDAI NAMCO Studios

The realistic reason I never played this game is simple: I never owned a Wii U. So why would it get a spot on the list, then? Not owning the console seems like a pretty valid reason to have not played a game. Well, this is the one exception I am making in this list, and here's why. There is no other series that exists which I've played at least a thousand hours in every other entry in the series and then just flat out never played one of the games. Well, actually I probably don't quite have 1,000 hours in Ultimate, but still. Several hundred. Smash 64? Played it every day for probably 2 years as a kid. Melee? Played it nonstop for like 2 years. Brawl? An entire year of college. Ultimate? Grinded online matches for months straight when it released, and went to local tournaments, too. But Smash 4? I've literally never played it. I just didn't have a Wii U and frankly wasn't interested in owning a Wii U. It seemed like a superfluous console and it was in an era when I was just getting into the "real world" and I just had other things I'd rather be doing than keeping up with all the latest Nintendo titles. This one isn't a shame so much for the reason of feeling like I'm missing out on something, but moreso kind of because it's like a pocket in time that's passed and the game will never really be relevant again. Like if it's not Melee or the most recent smash game, nobody ever cares about it. And it's not like the single player modes are compelling enough to seek out once the game has aged a lot. So it earns some credit on this list for the fact that it's kind of a "welp, you just missed it and there's really no going back" thing.

12. Diablo II

Initial release date: June 29, 2000
Composer: Matt Uelmen
Designers: David Brevik, Stieg Hedlund, Eric Sexton
Developers: Blizzard Entertainment, Blizzard North
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Macintosh operating systems

Now we're getting to the part of the list where I really feel like I'm missing something special for not having played these games. I frankly just missed Diablo 2 because PC gaming was not remotely on my radar yet when it came out. If it wasn't on a Nintendo console prior to 2003, I probably didn't know it existed. However, I caught the Blizzard bug eventually with World of Warcraft, and Diablo 3 followed when it came out. I was one of those who hadn't played Diablo 2 and so didn't whine and cry about every single aspect of the game which a reasonable adult would have no reason to...OK, maybe this isn't the place to have that rant. But you get where I'm going. Loved the hell out of D3 and so it really feels like a crying shame that I missed out on the one that was so much more beloved. The gameplay loop is honestly dang near perfect for me, along with the skill/difficulty curve and the lore and just everything about that game, really. There actually was one night when I went over to a friend's house and we played D2, but they had all beaten the game multiple times over and so just flew through all the maps constantly telling me to catch up, and so I barely got to even take in what was going on or learn how to actually play my class. Maybe got 6-8 hours in, but not enough to say I played it. This is one I definitely need to experience. Might stream a first play of it or something at some point.

11. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

Initial release date: July 3, 2002
Genre: Real-time strategy
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
Composer(s): Tracy W. Bush; Derek Duke; Glenn Stafford
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Macintosh operating systems
Designers: Chris Metzen, Rob Pardo

One slot above D2 just because I played WoW so much more than I played D3. Basically take everything I said in the entry about D2, but swap in WC3 for D2 and swap in WoW for D3. For being the cornerstone of the video game I have played for probably 10 times as many hours as the game I've played the second longest, it's kind of insane that I never went back and checked out WC3. Sadly that is now apparently a whole thing with Reforged being out. RTS games were never really my thing, but in this case I make a special exception because it's just a shame that I've never experienced a lot of the lore behind my all-time most played video game.

10. Dragon Quest (series)

First release: Dragon Quest; May 27, 1986
Latest release: Dragon Quest XI S; September 27, 2019
Composer: Koichi Sugiyama
Creator: Yuji Horii
Designers: Akira Toriyama, Koichi Sugiyama, Yuji Horii, Akihiro Hino, Koichi Nakamura, Kazuya Niinou, Manabu Yamana

I don't have a lot to say about this one because frankly I don't know much about it! How have I managed to miss this series? I don't know honestly. When I think about it, I don't recall any of my friends ever talking about these games. I feel like it was just a coincidental thing where nobody in my friend group ever got exposed to the series. I know it's like, the biggest thing, in Japan and obviously popular in the U.S. too. Like, there's some RPG series I like where I haven't played all of them, but it's kind of wild to me to think about how there's an entire series that is so massively popular as this one and I haven't even touched it. Though at the same time, that is a very exciting prospect! Any suggestions on where to start here?

Initial release date: October 3, 2002
Designer: Chris Sawyer
Composer: Allister Brimble
Developers: Chris Sawyer, Chris Sawyer Productions
Platform: Microsoft Windows
Publishers: Atari, Activision, Atari SA

Perhaps not quite the blockbuster title that some of the recent entries on the list were. However, this one earns its spot just strictly based on how freaking much I adored the first RCT. It was the first PC game that I ever bought for myself and played, and goodness gracious the nostalgia I have for that game is insane. I was totally captivated by it and would just play it over and over and over again. I never got bored of it. So...why exactly did I never play RCT 2? It's ridiculous! Like I never even looked up any information about it or anything. Tragic, honestly. Need to get back to this. Relive my childhood playing the first and then move on to #2!

7. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Initial release date: February 11, 2009
Composer: Yoko Shimomura
Writer: Hiroyuki Kubota
Developers: AlphaDream, Arzest

I have such fond memories of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. I think that was the first game I ever played where I laughed so much. MUSTARD OF YOUR DOOM is a line that I will never forget. The characterization and narrative was just all so charming. Plus it took the timed hits concept from SMRPG and took it to a whole new level in a great way. So I was thrilled to learn about Partners in Time coming out, and I bought it and played it right away. Loved it to death. Also basically everything on DS was just a great experience. So this game is on the list because I just don't know why I abandoned that series that I so thoroughly enjoyed. I've even heard people say that BIS is the best entry in the series! I mean, seriously it has a 97% approval on Google. I think the biggest aspect of this one that makes me feel regretful and thus putting it so high on the list is that it's one of few series where I actually was old enough to have been aware of it from its inception and actually anticipated each entry from the beginning, but then just randomly stopped.

6. Banjo-Tooie

Initial release date: November 20, 2000
Composer: Grant Kirkhope
Publishers: Nintendo, Xbox Game Studios
Developers: Rare, 4J Studios
Platforms: Nintendo 64, Xbox 360

Another instance of "how can I have never played a sequal to a game that I cherished so much?" Banjo-Kazooie is responsible for some of my fondest childhood memories playing games. That has a lot to do with the fact that it was toward the end of the era when my older sister still played vide games with me, before she lost all interest. There's something way more magical about a game like BK when you're exploring it with someone else. Just flat out adored that game so much, and some of the music still pops into my head from time to time. So you can imagine my excitement to learn that they were making another one, right! Well, apparently not because I never checked it out! No excuse at all here. 10 year old me would not approve.

Platforms: Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo DS, MORE
Composers: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu
Developers: Square Enix, Square, Tose, SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD.

This one probably speaks for itself, right? Kind of funny to think that I was around this site for the hype of Frog vs Master Chief and yet I've never played CT to this day. Not really sure how it happened but similar to Dragon Quest, none of my friend group ever talked about this game so I didn't learn about its existence until much later when I found it on the internet. I just never felt compelled to go back it for whatever reason! But nowadays it's like, "wow man wtf are you doing. Play Chrono Trigger."

4. The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

Initial release date: 1996
Engine: XnGine
Developer: Bethesda Softworks
Producer: Christopher Weaver
Composer: Eric Heberling
Platforms: DOS, MS-DOS

As I hinted at in a previous entry, Elder Scrolls is among my top game series ever. I've played every other mainline game, minus this one. I actually own it on CD-ROM as part of the Elder Scrolls Anthology collection, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. When I received the anthology for Christmas one year, I decided to play Arena first and then Daggerfall next. However there was a mishap where I somehow managed to lose my Arena save about 70% through the game, and so I ragequit and didn't play it any more, so that's why I never got to playing Daggerfall. All that said, in a way I've kind of been "saving" Daggerfall for myself because I kind of already know I'm going to love it. As someone who played Arena for the first time in the 2010s and loved it, I just know that Daggerfall is going to be even better. It's kind of like not wanting to finish a book because then it's over. I don't want to play Daggerfall yet because then I don't have any new (old) Elder Scrolls left to go back to. But one of these days...!

Developers: Nintendo, Grezzo, Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development

Big oof on this one, tbh. I've beaten most of the Zelda games in existence, but somehow never picked this one up yet! I generally prefer the 2D flavor of Zelda, so this one gets the series spot on the list over Skyward Sword (not to mention, I've had way more time to potentially play this one so it's even less excusable!) Zelda is definitely a top 5 series for me, so this one almost feels like a crime to have not played yet. I don't even have the "none of my friends ever talked about it" excuse this time.

2. Pokmon Ruby and Sapphire

Initial release date: November 21, 2002
Composer: Junichi Masuda
Developer: Game Freak
Platform: Game Boy Advance
Designers: Ken Sugimori, Satoshi Tajiri, Junichi Masuda, Shigeru Miyamoto, Shigeki Morimoto

This is a real WTF one for me. Was a kid in the 90s, so obviously I was a Pokmon fanatic. Had the GameBoy Color with Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Togepi on it. Had two GameBoys so that I could trade with myself for completion's sake. Obsessed over the trading cards. Loved the show. Talked about Pokmon nonstop with all my friends. Actually got in trouble at school for having our cards out talking and trading during class. I actually anticipated the release of Gold and Silver (somehow, I don't even know how young me was aware of it before it came out, tbh). Had my mind blown when I realized I got to do Kanto after the Elite 4. The works. So how did I never play gen 3? Nowadays, it's a fairly common thing for me to hear people my age say they also stopped liking the games as much after gen 2, because it got to be "too much" at that point. But like, they actually played gen 3 to find out that they didn't like it. I never even picked it up! I really do not understand how this happened. What's even stranger is that I bought Pearl the day it launched and loved it. Did hipster mindest kick in at a point to keep me from wanting to play gen 3? As in like I just didn't want to enjoy it or something? Idk on this one.

1. Super Mario Sunshine

Initial release date: August 26, 2002
Composer: Koji Kondo
Developer: Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development
Platform: GameCube
Designers: Shigeru Miyamoto, Koji Kondo, Yoshiaki Koizumi, Takashi Tezuka

This one is just simply on another level. There are several other games on this list that I'd rather play sooner than this one, however there is no question in my mind that my lack of playing this one makes the least sense. My earliest memory in life, period, is Super Mario World. It's like at the core of my being. Played it to heck and back. Played Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, Yoshi's Story, a million different Mario spinoff games, including the whole Mario Kart series, you name it. Now how in the world did I own a GameCube and never pick up Super Mario Sunshine? It's beyond my understanding. Not only have I never played it, but hell, I've spent probably 100 hours watching other people play it in the form of speedruns. It's one of the most entertaining and competitive speedrun games out there. And I've been really into speedrunning for a while now, having attended the past several GDQs. Like #2 and #3 on this list, it also is a game that literally all of my friends owned and played and talked about. So I don't have that excuse. On top of all that, it was in an era of my life where I actually had money of my own and was old enough and aware enough of the world to actually look out for new upcoming games and such, but still didn't have any "real world" responsibilities to distract me. I've never played a mainline Mario game I didn't like, and frankly there is nothing to suggest that I wouldn't like this game too. There is seriously no reason at all for me to have never played it yet.

Quest 64 - Didn't play. Aged like a shitty milk so I doubt I ever will. Barely even talked about and has terrible reviews all around. I don't see why you would want to play this. Hard pass

Minecraft - Didn't play. I remember I used to spent days on Warcraft 3 World Editor. But as I grew older I lost interest in those kind of games. I prefer a game that has a beginning and a end. And I heard Minecraft has a campaign mode but who really cares about it?

Fallout (series) - Didn't play. Not sure I am an fan of the genre.

Luigi's Mansion - Didn't play, but want to. One day I will play all 3 games

Harry Potter (series) - Didn't play...but why would you? At this point maybe add the whole Lego series to your list or something if you want to play "meh" games

Paper Mario - Only played the first game and like 20% of TTYD. Strong recommend. I need to continue TTYD someday

Golden Sun - Strong recommend. Fantastic two games. Might have aged a bit badly idk, but they have "dungeon puzzles" better than every other rpg. Dark Dawn is totally skippable

Super Smash Bros for Wii U - Played only the 3DS Version. Well even if Ultimate exists I still recommend it for the single player content, unlock everything, beat all challenges etc

Diablo II - Recommended. Great game

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos - Reforged is a lazy remaster, but it's better when talking about the campaign and campaign alone. Compare the graphics between the two as this is the only difference, if you believe the original graphics is better, play the original. Reforged barely add anything other than graphics, so it won't hurt your experience if you think the new graphics looks fine. Anyway, strong recommend, whatever version you choose (I recommend only the campaign)

Dragon Quest (series) - Didn't play, want to. No time sadly..

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 - I loved RCT1 so much. And 2 is better in every way...expect for not letting you charge for both park entrace and ride tickets. I hated that restriction so I gave up on it. It should be a good game if you can let that slide

Kingdom Hearts - Didn't play, want to

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - Best Mario and Luigi game. Play the DS version as the 3DS "Remake" is soulless. But honestly play it. You already played SSS so you know what to expect

Banjo-Tooie - Eh, it's fine. Original is better. It's fun and charming but nothing special, 7/10

Chrono Trigger - Honestly I think it's overrated, but it's an important game to play and the OST is fantastic. Yes, play it

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall - Didn't play. But I read that even the third game aged badly, so the second must be worse... sounds like a waste of time

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Best 2D Zelda until a ALBW came out. Fantastic game, play it. No idea if the Switch remake is better

Pokmon Ruby and Sapphire - Play it. Then play ORAS if you want. I think playing remakes is a different experience from the original so I recommend playing them both

Super Mario Sunshine - Didn't play World but Sunshine is the worst 3D Mario. It's still fun, yes? but some SHINES are so annoying and some of them has such a terrible level design that it makes you remember the bad parts more than the good parts. It's hard to recommend...but ok..
