Yeah but it's a movie so They didn't fear death ... i don't think you understand how ropes work. there's some kind of anchor near the top of the well where the rope was looped around, as clearly shown in the movie. the climbers were tied in from the ground before they started. meaning the length of the rope reaches the ground. if nothing was taking up the slack as you were climbing, then you'd just fall all the way back to the ground whenever you fell, killing you. so there is a belayer. but then it makes zero sense why he stops taking up the slack somewhere pretty low, so that every time someone fell from high up, they'd take a massive fall and smash into the side of the pit.
