Political reasons

I've always assumed that the typical fantasy dragon just likes looking at "pretty" things (like gold) and wants as many of them as possible.
I was about to say that the original SMB manual says that Bowser kidnapped Princess Peach (Toadstool) to keep her from turning the Mushroom People back to normal, but it actually just says that she can lift the spell and that Bowser is holding her, not that that's why he's holding her. http://www.poisonmushroom.org/2015/09/lets-read-the-original-super-mario-bros-manual/ ...
