Of course, I mean RECENT releases... or at least semi-recent

Stuff like Titan Souls would be good, but it's not a platformer, but it IS the kinda area I'm going for.

There'd Awesomenauts and ... well, I guess Freedom Planet (I didn't care for it, but it's ok)

Super House of Dead Ninjas didn't do anything for me either... I think it was the flickering graphics.

Dreaming Sarah is good - and I recommend it to all

Luftrausers was also fun for a hot minute... and about that long.

1001 Spikes? Nidhogg? Sweezy Gunner (is good)

...

Back the last time I made this topic, Oniken was the top recommendation... and I STILL haven't gotten around to finishing it

Celeste. Though a couple places it does have a hub with branching paths you need to explore to find the path to progress, sometimes multiple paths will lead to progress. So it starts to feel slightly metroid-like in those places, but for the most part it is strictly linear. It isn't that action focused with enemies to avoid or dispatch. It does have a few sections with enemies, but for the most part it's just platforming challenge. And it was really recent, like past two years recent. Just had a free update a few months ago that added a whole new chapter.

Looking back farther, I'd probably reach for VVVVVV. Yes, it isn't super linear, there's a whole explorable overworld and you can tackle each of the zones in any order you find them. But each zone is fairly linear on its own. Of course the hidden collectibles that encourage exploring and revisting zones makes it more metroid-like which you seem to want to avoid. The flipping instead of jumping might make it feel too different from a normal platformer, but I enjoyed it.

Any other platformer I played recently was definitely metroidvania.

The only reason lightning never strikes in the same place twice, is that the same place isn't there the second time.

Huh. Maybe Pankapu, Wonder Boy, Rad Rodgers. I thought I'd have more but it seems a lot of 2D games gravitate towards those genres. Nin always has plenty like Donkey Kong or Kirby.
