Modern times

Someone finds a wish-granting artifact. It grants three wishes. Storyline goes as standard: guy uses first two wishes for complete personal gain, backfires, uses third wish as: "I wish everything was back to normal."

What the character doesn't know is that the wish granting artifact interprets this as "undo all wishes". Meaning every wish ever granted by this artifact is now undone. The wisher is now flung into an alternative timeline where no wishes were ever made using the artifact. Meaning history will have been drastically altered. This can be used as a base to explore alternate histories and wacky events
