I think I hate minion spam. Both are tedious but minions can do chip damage if you aren't careful.

Yeah, I'd rather do a lot of damage to a single dude than manage a bunch of mobs.

I don't know if this is for a specific game or not, but I hate bullet sponges, especially in "realistic" games. It's why I couldn't get into the division, I just couldn't stand hitting a dude with a shotgun a thousand times and him turning around and murdering me quickly. Took me out of the whole experience.

Sponge.

Minion spam can get annoying, but at least they occasionally drop health/ammo to help you out. Even if they don't, it's somewhat realistic for the Big Bad organization to have hundreds of expendable pawns to throw at you.

Some unarmored dude shrugging off hundreds of bullets because he has a name and a title is just obnoxious.

I haven't played it in a while, but look at Destiny. Destiny has this real problem where bosses are either bullet sponges, and thus let you do your max DPS, or go down so fast they need phase interrupts. In a game where DPS can change drastically through patches, they can't seem to nail down the goldilocks zone, so bosses get shoved into either category and players complain either way.

Bullet sponge for sure. It just breaks the immerision for me if I have to spend more than 30 minutes on one fight.
Minion spam or whatever can be at least amusing.

And then there are boss fights that do both.............................

Depends. It's ok for a robot or a monster to be a bullet sponge, or even like an MGS boss where they have uncanny abilities in-universe or something. But not so much for a regular guy who just happens to have killed your family or whatever makes him an important enough fight story-wise to be a boss.

Also, when I say "bullet sponge", I mostly mean just that they can take more damage than a normal enemy. Obviously if it's like a 20 minute test of endurance because the stupid boss won't die, that's a different story.

Are we talking an actual bullet sponge, or bullet sponge that becomes temporarily non spongey and it is these moments you need to do real damage, otherwise the fight will take hours

Bullet sponge. Having me sit around wailing on shit forever isn't challenge, it's tedium. I'd rather tear through minions to get a good chunk of damage into the boss. This is where the Division fucked up hard. Don't have 5 elites who kill you in one hit and take 20 mags to kill. Have REASONABLY tough elites supplemented with trash to have fun actually using skills and stuff to carve through.

But that's what happens when you get hack devs who don't actually play games to make a corporate focus group game.
