I finally got my hands on a copy this week, and it absolutely is the best version of the first Resident Evil (sans the REmake, obviously).

You got two single player modes, Classic, which is the regular experience and Rebirth, which introduces new puzzles, new enemy placements, a small minigame that occurs when randomly entering rooms where you go into a first person view and slash at creatures with your knife, new item chests, etc.

There's a multiplayer mode where you can play against or with another person, with up to like 9 selectable characters.

It keeps the original soundtrack instead of the infamous Director's Cut OST.

There's new extras, like costumes unique to this port.

And finally, what I think is the best thing about the port, the quality of life upgrades. The knife no longer takes up a slot in your inventory, it's mapped to the L button now. Quick turn was added, manual reloading while ingame was added, and you can skip loading screen animations.

You can also boop Jill or Chris on the butt and chest with the stylus >_>

This is definitely the best way to play the original game IMO. I'm so very glad I got my hands on this.

Yeah, I noted that in my first sentence. REmake is the best way to experience RE1 overall, but for versions of the original game the DS port gets my vote.

Haven't gotten that far yet, and I've read they recast Richard's VA so I'm gonna miss the "THERE ARE TERRIBLE DEMONS! OUCH!!" narm of the original. Apparently the new dude phones it in :/

Yeah, fantastic port of the original game, but I wish they would release a compilation of the original 1-3 on modern consoles.

There's a PS1 rom that puts the original music in the dualshock version with the uncensored cutscenes

That's the best one to play IMO
