A U.S. district judge is expected to rule in favor of T-Mobile and Sprint in the antitrust fight over their proposed merger, people familiar with the matter say.

In after-hours trading, Sprint shares surged 53% to $7.37 following The Wall Street Journal report, while T-Mobile added 8% to $91.60.

Basically there will be Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Dish Network as the 4 providers now. Well as long as they renegotiate the deal since it's lapsed due to the time taken for reviews.

Why even have these laws if judges just approve these massive mergers?

Well it's not really the size of the merger but the effects of it. The states argued it would lead to higher prices for consumers, but it looks like the judge felt making a third large company would lead to better competition with Verizon and AT&T since Sprint looked like it had a better chance of going bankrupt than becoming a stronger competitor.

And there may be additional concessions required with his ruling.
