It was honestly pretty much exactly what I was expecting.

Not really great imo, but enjoyable. The plot wasn't good, and Sonic was way too annoying, but it was fun. Jim Carrey was fantastic, there were surprisingly a lot of great jokes, and ultimately it was fun to just see a Sonic movie. The references were fun to spot, and it wasn't as terrible as it could have been. I might have liked it less if I had payed for it though....

The Sanic reference was absolutely amazing I will say.

Overall I actually quite liked it!

It felt like a mix of Sonic X (with a much more likable human than Chris) and pre-Sonic 1 origin movie

Sonics personality felt like it was straight out of Sonic Adventure: Cheesy and fun with surprising depth

I expected the overall vibe to be similar to Detective Pikachu and Id say it was with a Sonic flair obviously. Not a particularly unique plot or anything but nice enough to get the job done.

I also liked the references to old games. There were also other... Surprising references Fortnite

I know a buncha people liked Jim Carey as Robotnik/Eggman but it didnt feel like it captured Eggmans original personality well. But like Sonic, it was basically Robotniks origin story too so Ill forgive it for now till a sequel

Speaking of sequels, I screamed in joy mid credits

The comedy was solid and it had enough references to feel legit but enough original stuff to stand on its own

Side characters were mostly likable too

Overall Im glad to see more video game movie adaptations do well

I really want the sequel after seeing the mid credits scene

Man, from everything I'm hearing about this movie it's that the people that work on it are big fans that wanted to make it the best they could, but Paramount's executives are fucking as much as they can at every turn.

The executives KNEW fans would hate the original ugly Sonic design, but pushed for it because they wanted it to have the same "realistic" style as in the Transformers and Michael Bay Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies (also from Paramount).

They're also the ones that also wanted the "Sonic in the real world" plot. The creative team wanted more Sonic characters in the movie and have him traveling to different worlds, but things kept on getting cut and they were told that they could save it for a sequel if the first one did great (which thankfully looks to be the case).

I wonder how much of the actual fun Sonic stuff had to be added in the movie later. Pre-production assets showed that originally it was a group of realistic lizard-like aliens that attacked Sonic in the opening, instead of the Echidna tribe. I wonder if the Tails thing was added late too.

To be fair, I think it legitimately worked for this movie to work well as an origin for both Sonic and Robotnik. I think the film as is works better to get kids who may only passingly know Sonic more into him than if they went all out with stuff from the games immediately. And with them hinting at the sequel being much more of the game stuff, I agree with the path they went.

I dunno, if they've only played the 2D games, they might. Maybe have the second film focus on Tails, introduce Metal Sonic, the Death Egg and the Chaos Emeralds, end with Sonic going super, then tease Knuckles and the Master Emerald for 3.

The movie was better than expected, specially seeing Jim Carrey going nuts as Robotnik. And man, those 16-bit credits were a throwback. The sequel should have both Tails and Knux, they already put up some echidnas when the owl is attacked!

I saw it tonight. Honestly I don't think it's great but that's why it kinda works for being a Sonic movie. Fun spots at times but overall mediocre. Sonic himself was probably the best part about the movie even with some eye roll worthy stuff. Managed to capture a good enough adaptation of him.

I feel like Jim Carrey being peak Jim Carrey in this is actually TOO manic for Robotnik a lot of times. While it is interesting to see "how would Robotnik act like if he HAD to work with humans to a degree instead of by himself with all his robots" it just basically being 90s Jim Carrey doesn't quite hit it for me. There are crosses and similarities in them but eh I wasn't completely feeling it.

I saw it a few days ago and I thought it was pretty good.

2 parts made me laugh. when the guy had a picture of Sanic and when the girl was running around going "gotta go fast"

So something else I was curious about. This movie has so much love and care in it. And we already talked about how the original design was horrific and how it makes no sense they did this with how good the movie is.

But then what was up with Gangster's Paradise for the original trailer too? Like what in the world was the thought process behind that? And how did the marketing do a complete fucking turnaround after the original trailer?

As a fan of AC series that I have played almost all games the problem was that they were focusing too much on the present storyline. And you know what ALL fans of the AC series hate? The present storyline.
This is why in the last AC game, out of 100 hours the present storyline is maybe around half an hour.

I'd argue Detective Pikachu, Sonic, Rampage, Tomb Raider (2018), and Mortal Kombat for sure. Prince of Persia and the original Resident Evil probably. Probably Need for Speed just by virtue of there not being much else that's decent. Struggling to think of what'd make up the final two. Maybe Warcraft and Ratchet & Clank?
