Sure it is. Hell, even those "untrustworthy" politicians all have them.

Just fill out a form, submit, and get it after a few weeks or months. Just like a passport.

not really, no.

If you have criminal things in your background check it's a no-no. If you're dating or close friends with a foreigner it's a no-no. If you're a dual citizen it's no-no.

Applications for Top Secret Clearance are public record and you can look them up. Some of the denials get pretty funny.

Yea right. Who, in today's interconnected world, does not have a Non-US citizen friend?

People with top secret security clearance.

But more seriously, it can depend on what country your acquaintance is from. Having a friend from England isn't going to raise as many red flags as a friend from Iran, but you will be obligated to provide information about them and the nature of your relationship with them.

Having potentially divided loyalties with another nation is a big deal when it comes to clearance.

But it's okay for elected officials.

I've had three friends who had "big deal" security clearance. The DoD interviewed every person they ever knew, who knows what else they found out. They probably know more about my friends I've known since I could walk than I do.
