The conservative Dixiecrats made it their national emblem in 1948 as part of their 'middle finger to desegregation', and many Southern states added it to their statehouses or flag between then and the 1960s in sympathy. South Carolina, which only recently got rid of the flag after a nutjob shot up a church, added the Confederate flag in 1961, just 4 months before Barack Obama was born. Unless you live alone in a basement, you see people who were directly and negatively impacted by that shit every day.
