I mean, the animish art design and tropes are annoying but I think in terms of gameplay it's a major set back from the first Xenoblade game or heck even from XCX. I mean who in living fuck thought adding a gacha system in this game was a good idea?

This. The only great things about the game are the exploration and the music, everything else ranges for just good to mediocre.

I think they could've handled skill checks significantly better. Skill checks got so obnoxiously bad in the last couple chapters.

This. I didn't really dig the faces in X, but other than that I preferred just about everything else. I'll admit X's OST is an acquired taste, but I dug it. Still, 1 trumps all in every category.

Easily the weakest part of the game was the gacha bullshit for the waifu collectathon. There's absolutely no need for that in a single player game.

The gacha system does suck, but it'd be fine if you had higher chances to unlock Blades. Or, alternatively, if you could bypass the gacha system by meeting certain unlock criteria that would grant you specific blade cores like those few story-related cores you can get.

But, honestly, while it could do with some improvement, the gacha system is not my gripe with the game. My gripe is Rex. Rex is bad. Rex's design is bad. Rex's dub VA is bad. The diver thing is bad. All of that is just bad.

I was going to start a NG+ this weekend and gave up early on because I just hate Rex that much. He's terrible. He's well and truly just about the worst protagonist I've ever dealt with, and I've played SO4. I could write an essay on all the reasons to hate Edge Maverick and that wouldn't come close to the level of ire Rex makes me feel every time he talks or exists.

Love the game otherwise.

The combat is pretty fun but the story is mediocre and the gacha system is god awful. That and you need to go in and out of menus way too often to do the mercenary quests and to set blades for getting past some obstacles in the overworld.

I liked that the combat changed to give you something to time with the standard attacks, but you move so damn slow in combat. I just preferred how fast you moved around in XCX.

As someone who clearly likes the game a lot and has put in 400+ hours in the game (not even an exaggeration):

- Story execution was really off. I didn't feel as connected to the characters as I should have, and there's a good reason. I can replay or rewatch XC1's major cutscenes and they still get to me. XC2...not so much. Most of it has to do with tonal clash. Example: let's have two female Blades have an existential talk about what it's like having past lives with their previous Drivers. But, those two Blades have very not-modest clothing that leaves little to the imagination, while also having generous camera shots of their tits and asses. I can't take shit like that seriously. Hell, one of those Blades has serious self-esteem issues to the point where she thinks the world would be better off if she offed herself, and she wears stripper clothing.

- A plus: the world-building and lore is really fantastic and interesting once you take the time to look into it. Again, the presentation just makes you gloss over it. But it's there in spades. Maybe not to the extent of Xenogears, but it's certainly an improvement from XC1 which...barely had anything.

- The gameplay is really good...but it takes getting to almost like 3/4 through the story before it gets to that point. The game takes way too long before the gameplay truly gets to shine (compared to XC1 and XCX where it's within the first few hours), but when it does it's really good and extremely addicting. Doesn't even feel slow anymore at that point.

- The music is god-like. Before release I didn't think XC1's could be topped, but it blew me away. I'd consider this soundtrack a damn achievement.

- The gacha is annoying and interferes with exploration, which is supposed to be a major part of the Xenoblade series. It's also a pain in the ass for people who want to get every sidequest since there's one for each Rare Blade you pull.

Its a very flawed game but I always loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and the quality of the Torna dlc only cemented it of one of my favorite switch games. Very acquired taste though.

Rex is the only thing that drags it down a bit. Hell, I can tolerate Tora just fine. Rex is a wack protagonist. Other than that, I love the entire package!

True, Rex is a weak protag. I can't wait for XCR to come out. I hope we get new info soon. I want to try and play through it for real this time.

This one I can understand, and almost agree with. I might give the edge to XC1 just because I relate to to better memories I had while playing XC1.

All I know is I was watching info videos for XC2 and there was a big gameplay breakdown.

As it entered its 20th minute and introducing the fourth gameplay system, I tapped out.

It's a really fun game but it certainly has flaws, with the gacha system being the biggest offender. If they even offered an alternative way to buy them with in-game currency I'd be whatever on it, but it isn't, and it's stupid as hell. It does have way more "anime" than previous ones. I didn't mind it, myself, but I see why others would find it a turn off. Music is still really good, world is pretty and fun to explore, the combat is goddamn addictive, and I still enjoy the story. I even like the English VA, especially Nia's.

My favorite Xenoblade is still X, though.
