The MGS series timeline order is...

MGS3 > MGS5 > MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS4

Both MGS4's story and MGS5's story is nonsense though, with 5 somehow being even more nonsense than 4, even if they finished it, which they didn't.

And this is coming from someone who thinks the story from 1-3 is good.

Nah, MGS5 is the best one and only one that is relevant.

It will probably hurt your understanding of it if anything.

I think the only one you'd "need" to play before it would be MGS3.

I quite enjoyed playing through MGS5. I'm still bummed that it wasn't properly finished.

Best one in terms of gameplay, sure. Probably one of the weakest in terms of story.

Yeah this is part of the big boss saga of games which all take pleace before metal gear let alone metal gear solid 1. Playing peace walker is really the only game you might need to play and even them 5 tries to explain previous events well enough you dont absolutely have to. I just feel one might enjoy it more if they have.

I was impressed with 5's general mechanics, but it becomes a huge grind when you get a mission to infiltrate the same base again for like the 5th time.

The open world they created while huge, only had a few actual real bases, and they keep telling you to infiltrate those places over and over.

I MGS 1-3 which while linear and shorter, it felt like you were always moving forward.

I loved the openness of the world in 5 but the world itself was pretty barren. A couple of smaller bases, one or two huge bases and then pretty much just little checkpoints peppered in between. Not many collectibles outside of blueprints, most of which I never even used. I still think the gameplay was superior. I liked the adjusted difficulty that tried to force you to change tactics. But the pacing was pretty rough, the repeating missions with certain parameters (extreme difficulty, total stealth, OSP missions) in order to unlock additional story missions was weird and the story itself was pretty weak. The only thing 5 really had going for it was the gameplay and the graphics.

Having a mission select to replay missions will always be a huge plus for me in any game so that gives 5 a boost for me. PW had been my go to metal gear solid game before that.

to play 5 you gotta play ground zeros first
which in some ways is better than 5

then to play 5 like a real metal gear game you got to turn off reflex mode, turn of the HUD that marks people

mgs4 is bleh
it has cool mechanics but the entire game is just you sitting there with the controller in your hands doing nothing
by the time it's over you feel like you just got mugged or something
there's almost no gameplay in it, just all these action set peices
