FFXIII's combat is a strange beast.
The complaint that the majority of the game can be beat by mashing X has merit, but can easily be said for the rest of the series as well. Save for a few boss battles, you'll wreck most of the encounters just using Rav Rav Com just like previous entries can be stomped using attack with the best equipment available.
They made individual encounters harder, but negated that difficulty spike completely by having you retry the battle instantly upon game over and completely ditching item management.
It's essentially the same as the rest of the series but still manages to take away control from the player by having you only control a single party member

13s battles are fairly simple for a good chunk of the game but I found the overall package enjoyable and engaging enough to get through it. Plenty of the battles on Gran Pulse require strategy and get pretty intense.

Are you really gonna argue TC didn't call it a bad game?

I wasn't trying to argue anything? I don't know if the TC thinks the game is bad not, but it's clear that they're not enjoying it from what they have said.

I like the SaGa series. Saga 1 (aka Final Fantasy Legend) is one of my favourite games, I was far into the Saga 2 remake translation but now my save won't load. Planning on playing all of them eventually, been playing Scarlet Grace on and off on the Switch since release and it's a good challenge + has a lot of freedom.
You're alright TC

You get a charm that removes all random encounters. You get two relocs that let one character attack 8 times. You get a 1 mp cost relic and a double cast relic.

Theres so much broken stuff in this game. Tools make the beginning of the game easy. Gau had some easy good rages. Eveyone can cast magic.

Theres too much strong shit in the game.

Sounds like you just plain don't like jRPGs.

That's fine. Most people don't. FF was only ever big during the PS1 and PS2 eras because of the FMVs and nothing else.

Many many people consider it the best game, best RPG, best SNES game.

And many, many people voted for Donald Trump to be president.

Humanity has a very prevalent tendency for being horribly, horribly wrong.

If you find the game too easy, fair enough. It's a Final Fantasy, what do you expect? If you want challenge in an FF game you're gonna have to create your own challenge run, play a hardtype hack, or be playing Final Fantasy Tactics for the first time and save all to a single slot upon entering Riovanes Castle...

Kefka's Tower is probably my favorite dungeon in the whole series. It forces you to use 3 parties who each fight different bosses and flip switches to allow each group to converge at the final boss.

Nah. Chapters 1-2, maybe 3, yes. Once you're into chapter 4 there's plenty of scope for strategy and tactics to make a big difference in combat.

Tastes are odd. Part of why I like XIII so much is because it doesn't have anything broken like this--if you want to excel at combat you have to get good at strategy and execution. But part of why I like VI (and Tactics) so much is precisely because there are so many broken and breakable things.

I'm a bit surprised Square hasn't done a full FF13 trilogy HD remaster on these systems. I am curious in playing Lightning Returns cause I heard it's really good, and FF13-2 seems to have a better battle system than 13 which wasn't TERRIBLE, just took way too fucking long to get really good or customized.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, the trash in his dungeon is difficult and it calls for having two parties. I cheesed it with Mog and moogle charm in party 2 my first time, tbh, since I only had one party up to snuff. Other stopping block in the pre-internet days was the boss at the top of Cultist's tower due to a few gimmicks in the same phase of the game.

Not necessary. You can split your main party across the three parties and use them as "babysitters". The lower level characters won't be all that much lower thanks to level averaging so they'll still be able to contribute, and they'll gain levels fast in the first few areas of the final dungeon.

So I got through the dumb Opera section, fuck knows how I'd have done it without save stares. That is quite possibly the most offensively badly designed and tedious section of gameplay I've seen in a supposedly good game. If you run out of time you have to go through the whole stupid Opera singing section again. How the hell did kids play and get through this on the Snes without losing their minds? Not to mention the bizarre subplot with the octopus out of nowhere. Then there's the translation error of the Impressario saying Maria has been kidnapped instead of Celes
