It's a tradition at this point, even if I'm late to the party. Anyway, we're probably entering into this contest with the least amount of info about the entrants since, well, the last Game of the Decade, or maybe longer ago than that. So I'm not going to wax eloquent and pretend that I know what I'm saying. I'm mostly going to provide relevant information, give some quick thoughts, and move on. I'm just going to do a whole division at a time, a fourpack at a time, because I don't think I'll have much to say.

People know Final Fantasy, and they know Tales. People know FF more than they know Tales. Berseria might be more popular among those who've played both, but I don't think it'll be enough. I always confuse Hollow Knight with Shovel Knight (which has actually looked decently popular), but we have virtually no data on it. Can't imagine it's worth much though. Bravely Default did well in GOTY, but that was six years ago. Does it have any staying power? I kinda doubt it. It didn't get into the last Games Contest, so I imagine the site at large isn't big on it. I'd just go with the higher seed there. Sekiro is a recent game that did well in GOTY. It's hard to know how popular RE2 or Three Houses is, but like BD, I don't imagine Ni No Kuni has any staying power based on that Remakes/Remasters poll. I think Sekiro Wins Twice. To be serious though, I like Sekiro against DQXI. I mean if pushed I'd take Walking Dead over it in Round 2 but I admit I may be going a bit out there on that one. It is a bit tough to argue with that GOTY poll though, that's a strong case for DQXI for both getting to that match and possibly winning it.

It's a widely praised game, and it's one of the oldest games in the bracket (which usually matters to us!). It's polled well in regular POTDs, but it was hit or miss in the 2015 contest (although I'd wager 40% on MGS3 is better than 75% of games here would do!). The biggest issue is the fact that Andromeda basically put the series into a coma, and we saw the effect it had on Shepard in the last Character Battle. It shouldn't have a problem with RE7, but I think Fallout 4 is a decent upset pick if you're actually looking for one. Although Fallout is dealing with the same issue as Mass Effect after how atrocious Fallout 76 was. VVVVVV is a fun game. Glad it's here. Even in the direct aftermath of winning GOTY in 2012, it still got crushed in that Game of the Generation poll. I doubt it's held up all that well, but this is apparently the division for series that aren't held in as high of a regard as they used to be! Bloodstained did well in GOTY in 2019 despite the fact that I'd never heard of it before and I have no idea what it's about! I'd almost want to pick it here, but I won't go that far. Horizon did really well in a stacked 2017 GOTY. Aloy lost a close match to an Overwatch character, which probably doesn't mean that much for the game's chances. You should only be picking Fortnite to win anything if you're betting on a rally, and I don't make picks based on that. Borderlands 2 could win this fourpack based on name value, but I'm rolling with Horizon here. I think it has a chance to be decently strong. It sold like crazy, and putting Spidey himself in match pics will help, too! I'm surprised we got a Dead Space game into this contest at all. It's never shown any strength before. Minecraft/Dota 2 is a match between two games that this site isn't really into. I'd take Minecraft for name recognition and brackets, but I don't think it'll do well against a game people care about. That Halo result is deceptive considering Halo got quadrupled by FFVII in the next round. I'm all over the map in division 1 compared to leon, but my 2 and 3 agree pretty closely. Borderlands > HZD and SK > UT were my only deviations.

That performance against SMRPG is really solid! I don't know anything about Baba Is You other than the title is funny, so that might get it some joke votes and anti-GTA votes. Cuphead has looked decent in some of its appearances, which is more than I can say about XCOM, which doesn't really strike me as this site's type of game. I don't think it has what it takes to beat GTAV though, but it'll probably do respectably. That also creates a dilemma because there's one big question: Will it basically operate as a Persona 4 proxy? Because it will kinda need to since Golden's actual playrate is probably low. As such, I'd be hesitant to take it to go deep because I think its bombing potential could be high. It shouldn't have any problem with FTL at all, but I could see it potentially winning or losing every other match in this division. Red Dead Redemption has looked okay in most of his polls, but it's never looked all that great. I post the Missile result to show you that Ghost Trick has had its moment in the sunlight, so it's okay for it to get blown out! I honestly don't know who to pick to win this fourpack. Part of me wants to pick P4G to flame out early because I think a lot of the board will take it deep, but my favoritism makes me want to pick it. It's quite the dilemma! I'll take it for now, but not with confidence. GTA5 > P4G > Red Dead seems pretty surprising to me. Im not looking at results much, but I would think Red Dead would be at least equal to GTA5 here.

I dunno. SOTC 60/40'd RDR and GTAV got 43% on SMRPG. GTAV's performance looks better at a glance, but SOTC is always stronger than I think!

I dunno, games like gta always overperform against stronger competition. its also a really different population now with a third of the vote totals from then. I just think red dead fits this population a little better than gta.

I dunno, maybe. I just wasn't impressed with RDR in 2015 or with John Marston in 2018. Yeah, you can say he had a bad opponent in Kratos, but I don't know that if you went Rockstar vs. Rockstar, RDR wins that.

GTA5 has this going in its favor:

Probably the former, but I also I think Three Houses is stronger than Awakening and Xenoblade (maybe? hopefully) will be a bit stronger this time around. If only the contest had been held after the re-release.

I get the feeling that this division is a double hedge. people will hedge on Persona 4 over GTA because it's GTA, and with 3H over P4 because it's Golden. 3H is the safest pick, probably, but also has the lowest ceiling since we just saw it a couple months ago.

We saw what a Netflix show did for Alucard in the last Character Battle, so could we see something similar here? Well, it won't be much of a concern for a while yet because even pre-Netflix Witcher 3 could steamroll this fourpack. There was a time when Assassin's Creed was pretty popular, but that time is not now. We saw Mass Effect 2/Starcraft in 2015, and it was almost even. I'd wager that there's a bigger dropoff between Starcraft and the first part of the Starcraft sequel than between ME2 and ME3. I feel like the hate for ME3 has largely died down as well, mostly because it got transferred over to Andromeda! But apathy toward the series as a whole could be a bad sign, too. I think it's got enough to get the win it was robbed of in 2015 though! one thing I've noticed about this contest is how correct the seeding is. there aren't any 13 or 14 seeds that are woefully underseeded and there aren't many top seeds that don't deserve it. you have to go a few rounds in to get real disagreement. I also think a lot of the 8/9 type of matchups are pretty "uhhh yeah you", in a way that will end up having a large consensus but without any real reason. kinda like DQ8/Persona 3 or something like that.

you could have designed a bracket that was a lot messier. you could see a fourpack that was something like
Dragon Ball FighterZ Cuphead Death Stranding Celeste or Bayonetta Yakuza 0 Horizon: Zero Dawn Super Meat Boy and then things get a lot messier. but instead, every fourpack seems to have a game that belongs as a 2-5 seed that just shuts down all of that speculation.
